Beneficial Effect of Li 5 FeO 4 Lithium Source for Li-Ion Batteries with a Layered NMC Cathode and Si Anode

The energy density of lithium-ion batteries can be increased by replacing the traditional graphite anode with a high capacity silicon anode. However, volume changes and interfacial instabilities cause a large irreversible capacity and a continual loss of lithium during cycling, which lead to rapid capacity loss. In this work, we add Li 5 FeO 4 (LFO) to a LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC) cathode as a pre-lithiation additive, which increases the lithium inventory and extends the cycle life of Si-graphite/NMC full cells, and decreases the NMC particle degradation. LFO delivers a large 764 mAh g –1 LFO capacity below 4.7 V vs Li/Li + . By tuning the LFO content in Si-graphite/LFO-NMC full cells, we show higher capacity, improved retention, lower impedance, and superior rate performance compared to full cells without LFO. Post-test characterizations demonstrate that LFO inclusion in the cathode matrix leads to less NMC secondary particle segregation/cracking and a thinner surface reduced layer on the NMC particles. The beneficial effects of LFO endure after the lithium reserve has been exhausted, highlighting a lasting synergy between the lithium source and electrode active materials. This study introduces a new approach to simultaneously increase lithium inventory and reduce cathode degradation, and makes critical advances toward enabling Si anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Variability and origins of grain boundary electric potential detected by electron holography and atom-probe tomography

A number of grain boundary phenomena in ionic materials, in particular, anomalous (either depressed or enhanced) charge transport, have been attributed to space charge effects. Developing effective strategies to manipulate transport behaviour requires deep knowledge of the origins of the interfacial charge, as well as its variability within a polycrystalline sample with millions of unique grain boundaries. Electron holography is a powerful technique uniquely suited for studying the electric potential profile at individual grain boundaries, whereas atom-probe tomography provides access to the chemical identify of essentially every atom at individual grain boundaries. Using these two techniques, we show in this paper that the space charge potential at grain boundaries in lightly doped, high-purity ceria can vary by almost an order of magnitude. We further find that trace impurities (<25 ppm), rather than inherent thermodynamic factors, may be the ultimate source of grain boundary charge. These insights suggest chemical tunability of grain boundary transport properties. A number of grain boundary phenomena in ionic materials, such as anomalous charge transport, have been attributed to space charge effects. Space charge potential at grain boundaries in lightly doped, high-purity ceria is now shown to vary by almost an order of magnitude.

Efficient, stable silicon tandem cells enabled by anion-engineered wide-bandgap perovskites

Maximizing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells that can exceed the Shockley-Queisser single-cell limit requires a high-performing, stable perovskite top cell with a wide bandgap. We developed a stable perovskite solar cell with a bandgap of ~1.7 electron volts that retained more than 80% of its initial PCE of 20.7% after 1000 hours of continuous illumination. Anion engineering of phenethylammonium-based two-dimensional (2D) additives was critical for controlling the structural and electrical properties of the 2D passivation layers based on a lead iodide framework. The high PCE of 26.7% of a monolithic two-terminal wide-bandgap perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell was made possible by the ideal combination of spectral responses of the top and bottom cells.

High performance thermoelectric module through isotype bulk heterojunction engineering of skutterudite materials

We demonstrate filled CoSb 3 skutterudite materials with excellent thermoelectric (TE) performance that results in one of the highest reported single stage module efficiency. Here, the improvement in TE material performance was obtained by creating isotype n/n “bulk heterojunction” structure through assembly of novel skutterudite nanocrystals with different Yb-doping content. Combination of significant increase in carrier transport through heterojunction structure and reduction in long-range acoustic phonon transmission by two-phase mixture resulted in enhanced power factor and reduced lattice thermal conductivity. As a result, the figure-of-merit (zT) of heterojunction TE material is improved by more than 35% compared with pristine single homogeneous material. Using these improved TE materials, a high module conversion efficiency of ~9.15% was obtained when operating between 650 °C and 50 °C. This is one of the highest conversion efficiency among the practically measured single stage modules.
