The crystal structures of Fe-bearing MgCO 3 sp 2 - and sp 3 -carbonates at 98 GPa from single-crystal X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation

The crystal structure of MgCO 3 -II has long been discussed in the literature where DFT-based model calculations predict a pressure-induced transition of the carbon atom from the sp 2 to the sp 3 type of bonding. We have now determined the crystal structure of iron-bearing MgCO 3 -II based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements using synchrotron radiation. We laser-heated a synthetic (Mg 0.85 Fe 0.15 )CO 3 single crystal at 2500 K and 98 GPa and observed the formation of a monoclinic phase with composition (Mg 2.53 Fe 0.47 )C 3 O 9 in the space group C 2/ m that contains tetrahedrally coordinated carbon, where CO 4 4- tetrahedra are linked by corner-sharing oxygen atoms to form three-membered C 3 O 9 6- ring anions. The crystal structure of (Mg 0.85 Fe 0.15 )CO 3 (magnesium iron carbonate) at 98 GPa and 300 K is reported here as well. In comparison with previous structure-prediction calculations and powder X-ray diffraction data, our structural data provide reliable information from experiments regarding atomic positions, bond lengths, and bond angles.

High-Pressure Synthesis of Metal–Inorganic Frameworks Hf 4 N 20 •N 2 , WN 8 •N 2 , and Os 5 N 28 •3N 2 with Polymeric Nitrogen Linkers

Polynitrides are intrinsically thermodynamically unstable at ambient conditions and require peculiar synthetic approaches. Now, a one-step synthesis of metal–inorganic frameworks Hf 4 N 20 •N 2 , WN 8 •N 2 , and Os 5 N 28 •3N 2 via direct reactions between elements in a diamond anvil cell at pressures exceeding 100 GPa is reported. The porous frameworks (Hf 4 N 20 , WN 8 , and Os 5 N 28 ) are built from transition-metal atoms linked either by polymeric polydiazenediyl (polyacetylene-like) nitrogen chains or through dinitrogen units. Triply bound dinitrogen molecules occupy channels of these frameworks. Owing to conjugated polydiazenediyl chains, these compounds exhibit metallic properties. The high-pressure reaction between Hf and N 2 also leads to a non-centrosymmetric polynitride Hf 2 N 11 that features double-helix catena-poly[tetraz-1-ene-1,4-diyl] nitrogen chains [–N–N–N=N–] ∞ .

A portable on-axis laser-heating system for near-90° X-ray spectroscopy: application to ferropericlase and iron silicide

A portable IR fiber laser-heating system, optimized for X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) spectroscopy with signal collection through the radial opening of diamond anvil cells near 90°with respect to the incident X-ray beam, is presented. The system offers double-sided on-axis heating by a single laser source and zero attenuation of incoming X-rays other than by the high-pressure environment. A description of the system, which has been tested for pressures above 100 GPa and temperatures up to 3000 K, is given. The XES spectra of laser-heated Mg 0.67 Fe 0.33 O demonstrate the potential to map the iron spin state in the pressure–temperature range of the Earth's lower mantle, and the NIS spectra of laser-heated FeSi give access to the sound velocity of this candidate of a phase inside the Earth's core. This portable system represents one of the few bridges across the gap between laser heating and high-resolution X-ray spectroscopies with signal collection near 90°.

Recreating Giants Impacts in the Laboratory: Shock Compression of MgSiO 3 Bridgmanite to 14 Mbar

Understanding giant impacts requires accurate description of how extreme pressures and temperatures affect the physical properties of the constituent materials. Here, we report shock experiments on two polymorphs of MgSiO 3 : enstatite and bridgmanite (perovskite) crystals. We obtain pressure-density shock equation of state to 14 Mbar and more than 9 g/cm 3 , a 40% increase in density from previous data on MgSiO 3 . Density-functional-theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations provide predictions for the shock Hugoniot curves for bridgmanite and enstatite and suggest that the Grüneisen parameter decreases with increasing density. The good agreement between the simulations and the experimental data, including for the shock temperature along the enstatite Hugoniot reveals that DFT-MD simulations reproduce well the behavior of dense fluid MgSiO 3 .We also reveal a high optical reflectance indicative of a metal-like electrical conductivity which supports the hypothesis that magma oceans may contribute to planetary magnetic field generation.
