Cost-optimal selection of pH control for mineral scaling prevention in high recovery reverse osmosis desalination

Conference proceedings for Foundations of Computer Aided Process Design (FOCAPD) 2024 that details a cost optimization model for pH control to prevent mineral scaling in high recovery reverse osmosis. This work applies a framework for incorporating detailed water chemistry predictions such as precipitation, pH change, and mineral scaling tendencies with process-scale optimization. It demonstrates that the acid choice for pH control can have a significant impact on pretreatment costs.

NAWI Research Spotlight: Technoeconomic Assessment of Brine Valorization from Brackish Groundwater

This NAWI Research Spotlight Webinar was presented to the NAWI Alliance on June 27, 2024. The presentation describes project progress to date on a technoeconomic assessment of brine valorization from brackish groundwater. Desalination at inland brackish groundwater treatment plants is currently limited by high costs of concentrate management and disposal. With current methods, 5-25% of the feed is disposed of as concentrate, with 98% of disposal using conventional methods (i.e. no byproduct recovery). This project aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility of industrial ecosystems to desalinate brackish groundwater and supply existing and potential markets for clean concentrate or other bulk constituents from the brine.

WaterTAP: Tool for analysis of water treatment systems

This presentation describes the Water treatment Technoeconomic Assessment Platform (WaterTAP), an open-source software tool to analyze water treatment trains. The presentation was provided to the NAWI Alliance Fall Meeting on November 29th 2023 and it includes an overview of the tool and a couple of analyses demonstrating its capabilities. The analyses include a technoeconomic assessment of a novel membrane-based technology called low salt rejection reverse osmosis and a brackish water desalination train with pretreatment.

WaterTAP Technical Brief: Ion Exchange Model Demonstration and Optimization

Ion exchange is an important water treatment process for removal of targeted contaminants, including those associated with hardness. In this report, we introduce the ion exchange model developed for WaterTAP and present some example analysis of Ca 2+ removal for 0.1 MGD and 10 MGD systems. The model is a single-component, steady-state implementation that enables process optimization based on the influent ion concentration, resin capacity, and resin selectivity. Based on a survey of costing references for ion exchange, the WaterTAP ion exchange model returns reasonable estimates for the levelized cost of water (LCOW) of an ion exchange process, and performs as expected when critical design parameters, such as the resin capacity and selectivity, are varied.
