Covering Cavities by Electrodeposition

Reworking technique allows complex surfaces to be reshaped. Contours of large machined parts reworked quickly and inexpensively by electrodeposition and machining, with little risk of damage. Reworking method employs simple, reliable, well-known procedures.

Repairing Hard-to-Reach Cracks in Heat-Exchanger Tubes

Inaccessible leaks repaired from accessible side of tube. Fish-Mouth insert placed in cut in leaky heat-exchanger tube. Insert welded or brazed to tube, and remaining open area of cut patched. Method developed for repairing leaks in nozzle coolant tubes of Space Shuttle main engine. Method also used on other types of tubular heat exchangers.

Atomization and Mixing Study

The primary objective was the obtainment of atomization and mixing performance data for a variety of typical liquid oxygen/hydrocarbon injector element designs. Such data are required to establish injector design criteria and to provide critical inputs to liquid rocket engine combustor performance and stability analysis, and computational codes and methods. Deficiencies and problems with the atomization test equipment were identified, and action initiated to resolve them. Test results of the gas/liquid mixing tests indicated that an assessment of test methods was required. A series of 71 liquid/liquid tests were performed.

Repairing Hidden Cracks in Coolant Tubes

Repair technique closes leaks in tubes or conduits where access limited to wall opposite crack. Technique applicable to any tubular assembly where tubes bundled together or bonded to supporting shell, such as in heat exchangers. Procedure provides structural support to area failed and uninterrupted flow without significantly altering heat-transfer profile.
