SAVY-4000 Lifetime Extension Overview for FY23

The SAVY-4000 (hereafter “SAVY) was granted a 15 year design life as of June 11, 2019. Since that time, a concerted effort to evaluate the SAVY lifetime beyond 15 years initiated. Several key gaps in knowledge were identified by subject matter expert reviewers across the complex, along with testing that should be included or addressed in the next technical basis. While surveillance has not fundamentally changed since the last life extension, many key techniques have since been identified as necessary to evaluate key container performance requirements not addressed previously (i.e. drop qualification release rate). FY23 provided an opportunity to establish the groundwork for the development of those key techniques that aid in addressing DOE Manual 441.1-1 (hereafter “Manual”) requirements for safe storage of nuclear material.

Benchmarking the AirSquared All-Metal Scroll Pump Against the Normetex 15 - Preliminary report

Tritium operations require specialized equipment for material compatibility, safety, and waste considerations. Non-metallic pump materials (polymer, oil, or grease) on a tritium-wetted surface can absorb tritium and/or undergo isotope exchange between tritium and more common protium, creating tritiated compounds that can result in material property modification via beta-radiolysis, inventory loss, reduced performance and special waste considerations, all of which increase the operating cost for a facility. Vacuum pumps move gas via a pressure differential between volumes of an operation. Several types of all-metal vacuum pumps exist for this application including metal bellows, diaphragm and scroll pumps. A metal bellows pump incorporates only metal components at the wetted surfaces. The common metal bellows pump employed in tritium facilities, the MB601 (Senior Metal Bellows, Sharon, PA, USA) creates a gas-motive force with a vacuum pressure between 30-40 torr. These pumps can efficiently move gas from one process step to another, as long as sub-30 torr pressures are not required. However, for higher vacuum demand, an all-metal scroll pump can be used with the bellows pump serving as a “backing” pump. This configuration typically provides an achievable vacuum of less than 20 mTorr. All-metal scroll pumps are a technology uniquely applicable to tritium gas handling. The industry standard all-metal scroll pump for glovebox-scale tritium operations is the Normetex 15 m 3 /hr, typically referred to as the Normetex 15 (Normetex Pompes, Pont Audemer, France). However, the final Normetex pumps were manufactured in 2012, rendering them no longer available. Eumeca SaRL (formerly Normetex) has developed and is marketing a scroll pump based on the design of the Normetex 15. A US company, AirSquared (Broomfield, Colorado), has developed and is marketing a potential alternative to the Normetex 15. The Gas Transfer Systems group (Q-7) of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) procured serial number 0001 of the AirSquared All Metal Vacuum Scroll pump model number V16H034A-C01 in 2019. The LANL Hydrogen Processing Laboratory (HPL) has been evaluating the performance of the pump compared to a Normetex pump as a potential replacement in tritium and fusion facilities requiring this type of pump.

Biodegradation Studies of Polyhydroxybutyrate and Polyhydroxybutyrate- co -Polyhydroxyvalerate Films in Soil

Due to increased environmental pressures, significant research has focused on finding suitable biodegradable plastics to replace ubiquitous petrochemical-derived polymers. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a class of polymers that can be synthesized by microorganisms and are biodegradable, making them suitable candidates. The present study looks at the degradation properties of two PHA polymers: polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyhydroxybutyrate-co-polyhydroxyvalerate (PHBV; 8 wt.% valerate), in two different soil conditions: soil fully saturated with water (100% relative humidity, RH) and soil with 40% RH. The degradation was evaluated by observing the changes in appearance, chemical signatures, mechanical properties, and molecular weight of samples. Both PHB and PHBV were degraded completely after two weeks in 100% RH soil conditions and showed significant reductions in mechanical properties after just three days. The samples in 40% RH soil, however, showed minimal changes in mechanical properties, melting temperatures/crystallinity, and molecular weight over six weeks. By observing the degradation behavior for different soil conditions, these results can pave the way for identifying situations where the current use of plastics can be replaced with biodegradable alternatives.

3D-printed electrode, gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) for fuel cell applications

An electrocatalytically active ink composition is used with an additive manufacturing process, such as 3D printing, to produce electrodes having consistent, adaptable, and high surface area structures. The electrocatalytically active ink composition includes a mixed powdered precursor and a polymer matrix. The mixed powdered precursor includes a carbon source, a dopant source, and/or a metal-containing catalyst. The material and electrochemical properties of the ink composition may facilitate 3D printing of electrochemically active electrodes for energy conversion and storage devices, and may allow fine-tuning of macro- and microstructures to develop electrodes having improved activity and efficiency.

Characterization of Polyhydroxybutyrate-Based Composites Prepared by Injection Molding

The waste generated by single-use plastics is often non-recyclable and non-biodegradable, inevitably ending up in our landfills, ecosystems, and food chain. Through the introduction of biodegradable polymers as substitutes for common plastics, we can decrease our impact on the planet. In this study, we evaluate the changes in mechanical and thermal properties of polyhydroxybutyrate-based composites with various additives: Microspheres, carbon fibers or polyethylene glycol (2000, 10,000, and 20,000 MW). The mixtures were injection molded using an in-house mold attached to a commercial extruder. The resulting samples were characterized using microscopy and a series of spectroscopic, thermal, and mechanical techniques. We have shown that the addition of carbon fibers and microspheres had minimal impact on thermal stability, whereas polyethylene glycol showed slight improvements at higher molecular weights. All of the composite samples showed a decrease in hardness and compressibility. The findings described in this study will improve our understanding of polyhydroxybutyrate-based composites prepared by injection molding, enabling advancements in integrating biodegradable plastics into everyday products.

Uranium Bed Design Parameters for Tritium Plants Supporting Fusion Reactors

Uranium hydride is commonly used to store hydrogen or its isotopes in a solid state. The Self-Assaying Tritium Accountancy and Containment Unit for ITER (STACI) is a 5.2-kg bed of depleted uranium (dU) capable of holding up to 33 mol of hydrogen or its isotopes. Here we summarize the data analysis of past experimental campaigns with STACI, with the aim of describing the kinetics and thermodynamics of the hydriding process. Computed tomography imaging was performed on STACI both before and after its experimental campaign, and a high degree of swelling was observed in the dU. Literature on studies in regard to the swelling of large (multikilogram) quantities of uranium hydride for storage applications was not identified during this study. Data from the experimental campaign, as well as data on the formation reaction, are presented. The authors hope to create an analytical model of STACI based on these data.
