Thermal design and analyses of Skylab multipurpose furnace and experiments
The Skylab multipurpose electric furnace was designed to accommodate eleven different materials processing experiments with their respective thermal requirements and constraints. Extensive prototype and ground-based tests were carried out and detailed thermal analyses were performed to ensure that these requirements and constraints are met. The basic features of the multipurpose electric furnace and the eleven experimental cartridges are outlined. The design and development problems encountered and the solutions to these problems are discussed. The analytical techniques used for thermal design and analyses are described.
