Microfluidic Icy-World Chemical Analyzer

Measurements made with the Wet Chemistry Laboratory (WCL), including oxidation-reduction potential (E h ), regolith/soil pH, stable oxidants relevant to chemosynthetic metabolism (e.g., perchlorate, sulfate), and strong electrolytes were key to understanding habitability at the Phoenix Mars landing site. The Microfluidic Icyworld Chemical Analyzer (MICA), the next-generation WCL, is a standalone instrument package that incorporates the same classes of electrochemical sensors as WCL, but in a microfluidic format, enabling habitability assessment in a smaller instrument package (~2.3 kg, ~2 L).
