Experimental Study for Validation of Resilient Response of Controls - Thrust 2 Controls Assessment

The focus of this project is to design, execute, and analyze experiments around resilience response. As part of the Resilience through Data-Driven, Intelligently Designed Control (RD2C) initiative, this project builds upon the previously designed control algorithms and experiments. It designs detailed uses cases to test RD2C-developed mitigation schemes in specific realistic scenarios, analyze and save the measurement data sets. Having a high-confidence and consistent data set is crucial for identifying relevant metrics to describe the system resilience in specific real-life-like scenarios of power grid operation.

Guest Editorial: Special section on Resilient Control of Cyber-Physical Power and Energy Systems

Our power and energy systems are becoming more and more integrated and interconnected. The increasing integration of edge devices and dependence on cyber infrastructure provides both the potential for benefits and risks. The integration enables more dynamic and flexible control paradigms while at the same time increasing the cyberattack surface and uncertainty of behavior. Control methodology in this new world must be designed for resilience and must have the ability to withstand, react, and respond to both physical faults and cyber-induced threats. Finally, understanding system resilience under adverse conditions requires studying control performance and how cyber infrastructure can integrate with and support the overall resilience of the system.

Serial communication tapping and transmission to routable networks

Apparatuses and methods for tapping serial communications and transforming the serial data into a format appropriate for routable networks are significant for purposes of security and troubleshooting, especially in critical infrastructure networks. Communication taps should be completely passive such that any failure would not interrupt the serial communications. Furthermore, automatic determination of unspecified serial protocol frames allow general implementation across various networks, or across devices within a single network, without the need to customize for each implementation.

A Data-driven approach to Determining the Fidelity in the Hardware-in-the-loop Systems using Subspace Identification Method

One of the major questions in any Hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation is to understand the fidelity of the HiL simulation itself which is most often indicated qualitatively as either high or low instead of quantifying it. Being cognizant of the level of fidelity forms the crux to assess the validity and credibility of the HiL simulation. In this work, we address this issue by developing a systematic, data-driven approach to assess the fidelity of any HiL simulation, and more specifically, the fidelity of the interface between the simulator and hardware in an HiL simulation. Applying a subspace identification method, a linear system representing the interface is obtained from the time-series data captured between the hardware and simulator in the HiL simulation. Finally, the fidelity is defined based on this linear system properties. The proposed data-driven fidelity quantification framework is illustrated on the IEEE 123 node feeder system running on HYPERSIM and interacting with virtual protection relays.

High-fidelity model-driven deception platform for cyber-physical systems

Methods are described for protecting a cyber-physical system against a potential attacker of the system. The methods include a method of generating a plurality of examples for a training data set and training a system model using the training data set to generate a decoy configured to generate a synthetic output that mimics historical outputs generated by the system for a given historical system context. Also described is a method including receiving a system context of a cyber-physical system; receiving an inquiry into the system by a potential attacker; applying a system model to the system context and the inquiry; obtaining from the system model a synthetic output that mimics how a component of the system would respond to the inquiry given the system context; and providing the synthetic output to the potential attacker.

Computing system operational methods and apparatus

Computing system operational methods and apparatus are described. According to one aspect, a computing system operational method includes accessing user information regarding a user logging onto a computing device of the computing system, processing the user information to determine if the user information is authentic, as a result of the processing determining that the user information is authentic, first enabling the computing device to execute an application segment, and as a result of the processing determining that the user information is authentic, second enabling the application segment to communicate data externally of the computing device via one of a plurality of network segments of the computing system.
