Buckling mode localization in elastic plates due to misplacement in the stiffener location

This paper deals with the buckling of the stiffened plate under uni-axial compression. The direct integration of the governing differential equation is performed and the exact solution to the problem is obtained. As examples, a square plate with single stiffener, and a stiffened three-span, continuous plate are investigated, with special attention given to the influence of stiffener misplacement on the buckling load and mode shape of the plate. It is found that a small misplacement of the stiffeners from the nominal configuration may change the buckling mode from a global one to a highly localized one.

Successful combination of the stochastic linearization and Monte Carlo methods

A combination of a stochastic linearization and Monte Carlo techniques is presented for the first time in literature. A system with separable nonlinear damping and nonlinear restoring force is considered. The proposed combination of the energy-wise linearization with the Monte Carlo method yields an error under 5 percent, which corresponds to the error reduction associated with the conventional stochastic linearization by a factor of 4.6.

Buckling of stiffened shells with random initial imperfections, thickness and boundary conditions

The paper proposes a method to predict the buckling load of stiffened, composite shells reliably, where besides the randomness of the initial geometric imperfections also a random variation of the wall thickness and the uncertainty of the precise edge conditions is included in the analysis. The introduction of the variability in the thickness from shell to shell, in an ensemble of nominally identical shells, produced by the same manufacturing procedure is motivated by the growing realization of the importance of thickness variations by composite shells. The probabilistic treatment of the boundary conditions is dictated by the fact that 'true', deterministically specified boundary conditions are unlikely to be realizable in practice.

Remarks on a dynamical higher-order theory of laminated plates and its application in random vibration response

This paper presents an analysis of the equations governing the dynamics of shear-deformable composite plates, without recourse to a variational procedure. It is noted that the operator associated with the governing equations is nonsymmetric; using a first-order perturbation technique, it is shown to be positive-definite. In addition, using the biorthogonality condition, the dynamic response of the plate is formulated.

Random vibrations of laminated plates modeled within the first order shear deformation theory

This paper deals with the dynamic response of anisotropic laminated composite plates to stationary random excitation. The theory of laminated plates used here includes shear deformation and rotary inertia effects in the same manner as Mindlin's theory for isotropic homogeneous plates. Two cases of random pressure fields are considered in this analysis. In the first case, it is modeled as a uniformly distributed load, random in time with an exponential decaying correlation function, while in the second one as a jet noise, fully correlated in one direction and homogeneous in the perpendicular one. The analysis presented herein, as well as the obtained response characteristics, expressed in terms of mean-squares and angle-dependent mean-squares, may be useful in the design of composite plates subjected to random pressure fields and in the evaluation of their reliability.

Reliability of laminated plates

The reliability of laminated plates subjected to in-plane random static loads is derived. The Hashin failure criterion for unidirectional fiber composites is used to establish the performance function. The Hasofer-Lind method is then applied and the reliabilities associated with the various failure modes are obtained.
