Measurement of the neutron cross section on argon between 95 and 720 MeV

We report an extended measurement of the neutron cross section on argon in the energy range of 95-720 MeV. The measurement was obtained with a 4.3-hour exposure of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector to the WNR/LANSCE beam at LANL. Compared to an earlier analysis of the same data, this extended analysis includes a reassessment of systematic uncertainties, in particular related to unused wires in the upstream part of the detector. Using this information we doubled the fiducial volume in the experiment and increased the statistics by a factor of 2.4. Here we also shifted the analysis from energy bins to time-of-flight bins. This change reduced the overall considered energy range, but improved the understanding of the energy spectrum of incoming neutrons in each bin. Overall, the new measurements are extracted from a fit to the attenuation of the neutron flux in five time-of-flight regions: 140ns-180ns, 120ns-140ns, 112ns-120ns, 104ns-112ns, 96ns-104ns. The final cross sections are given for the flux-averaged energy in each time-of-flight bin with statistical and systematic (syst) uncertainties: σ(146 MeV) = 0.60 $^{+0.14}_{-0.14}$ ±0.08(syst) b, σ(236 MeV) = 0.72 $^{+0.10}_{-0.10}$ ± 0.04(syst) b, σ(319 MeV) = 0.80 $^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$ ±0.040(syst) b, σ(404 MeV) = 0.74 $^{+0.14}_{-0.09}$ ±0.04(syst) b, σ(543 MeV) = 0.74 $^{±0.09}_{-0.09}$ ± 0.04(syst) b.

Jaynesian Analysis of Environmental Chemistry: Systems Model Component Integration via the Arctic Aquatic Carbon Cycle

Focal Areas: All three are touched upon from the OBER call. We will consider formal logical inference and entropic information analysis for sparse but intensive chemical measurements, as optimal drivers for managing process complexity. As a centerpiece for the discussion we take soil-to-sea organic structural evolution within the Arctic hydro-geochemosphere, assessing detrital negentropy then algorithmic greed to generate ranked, reduced mechanisms for system integration.

Performance Improvement of the CHeX Flight Cryostat

The JPL flight cryostat last flew on the Space Shuttle in October 1992 in support of the Lambda Point Experiment. A new experiment, the Confined Helium Experiment (CHeX), now in development will reuse this cryostat. An improvement to the cryostat performance was necessitated by the CHeX experiment having a longer mission requirement and stricter requirements imposed by NASA with respect to a launch-scrub turnaround scenario. The parasitic heat load reduction necessary to relieve both constraints was about 15percent or 1 liter/day. The techniques implemented to achieve this goal, and subsequent results are presented along with a thermal model used during the analysis of the cryostat.

Heterogeneous chemistry on Antarctic polar stratospheric clouds - A microphysical estimate of the extent of chemical processing

A detailed model of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), which includes nucleation, condensational growth. and sedimentation processes, has been applied to the study of heterogeneous chemical reactions. For the first time, the extent of chemical processing during a polar winter has been estimated for an idealized air parcel in the Antarctic vortex by calculating in detail the rates of heterogeneous reactions on PSC particles. The resulting active chlorine and NO(x) concentrations at first sunrise are analyzed with respect to their influence upon the Antarctic ozone hole using a photochemical model. It is found that the species present at sunrise are primarily influenced by the relative values of the heterogeneous reaction rate constants and the initial gas concentrations. However, the extent of chlorine activation is also influenced by whether N2O5 is removed by reaction with HCl or H2O. The reaction of N2O5 with HCl, which occurs rapidly on type 1 PSCs, activates the chlorine contained in the reservoir species HCl. Hence the presence and surface area of type 1 PSCs early in the winter are crucial in determining ozone depletion.

Multipoint observations of planar interplanetary magnetic field structures

IMF data made on November 1, 1984, by three spatially well-separated spacecraft in the solar wind are presented. The IMF measured by each of the spacecraft is found to consist of a multiplicity of structures within which the magnetic field varies in parallel planes. The orientations of these planes at the three spacecraft locations are similar. The planes are inclined at a large angle to the ecliptic, and they lie almost perpendicular to the nominal Parker spiral direction in the ecliptic. Intercomparisons of the measurements at the various spacecraft show that the IMF features at one spacecraft are clearly reproduced at another, with time delays required for signal propagation. From these time delays and the mutual separations of the spacecraft, it is inferred that the structures are convecting with the ambient flow. Simultaneous observations made downstream of the bow shock in the magnetosheath reveal that the magnetosheath magnetic field, too, is planar.

Ultraviolet absorption spectra of FNO3 and HOF

Ultraviolet absorption cross sections of gas phase FNO3 and HOF have been measured over the wavelength range 180 to 400 nm at 295 K. The maximum photolysis lifetime for FNO3 in the stratosphere is calculated to be in the order of days, and for HOF in the order of hours.
