Direct measurement of microwave loss in Nb films for superconducting qubits

Niobium films are a key component in modern two-dimensional superconducting qubits, yet their contribution to the total qubit decay rate is not fully understood. The presence of different layers of materials and interfaces makes it difficult to identify the dominant loss channels in present two-dimensional qubit designs. In this paper, we present the study that directly correlates measurements of RF losses in such films to material parameters by investigating a high-power impulse magnetron sputtered (HiPIMS) film atop a three-dimensional niobium superconducting radio frequency (SRF) resonator. By using a 3D SRF structure, we are able to isolate the niobium film loss from other contributions. Our findings indicate that microwave dissipation in the HiPIMS-prepared niobium films, within the quantum regime, resembles that of record-high intrinsic quality factor of bulk niobium SRF cavities, with lifetimes extending into seconds. Microstructure and impurity level of the niobium film do not significantly affect the losses. These results set the scale of microwave losses in niobium films and show that niobium losses do not dominate the observed coherence times in present two-dimensional superconducting qubit designs, instead highlighting the dominant role of the dielectric oxide in limiting the performance. We can also set a bound for when niobium film losses will become a limitation for qubit lifetimes.

Transfer of EP and Doping Technology for PIP-II HB650 Cavities from Fermilab to Industry

Fermilab has optimized the surface processing conditions for PIP-II high beta 650 MHz cavities. This encompasses conditions for bulk electropolishing, heat treatment, nitrogen doping, post-doping final electropolishing, and post-processing surface rinsing. The technology has been effectively transitioned to industry. This paper highlights the efforts made to fine-tune the process and to smoothly share them with the partner labs and an associated vendor.

First Results from Two Nb3Sn Cavities Assembled in a CEBAF Quarter Cryomodule

Two 1.5 GHz CEBAF C75-shape 5-cell accelerator cavities were coated with Nb3Sn film using the vapor diffusion technique at Fermilab and Jefferson Lab coating facilities. Both cavities were measured at 4 K and 2 K in the vertical cavity test facility (VCTF) in each lab, then assembled into a CEBAF quarter cryomodule at Jefferson Lab. The cryomodule was tested at 4 K and 2 K in the CryoModule Test Facility (CMTF) at Jefferson Lab. RF test results for both cavities in the cryomodule are similar to those in the qualification test in VTS, with one cavity reaching Eacc = 7.9 MV/m and the other - 13.3 MV/m at 4 K.

Surface structure studies in 2D and 3D Nb resonators using GI-XRD

Superconductor radio frequency (SRF) Nb-resonators are a key element in the development of new generations of particle accelerators as well as in the fabrication of 3D circuit QED architecture for quantum computing. Nevertheless, Niobium is extremally reactive to light elements such as C, N, O and H, and therefore to the impurities ordering under special conditions, e.g., cryogenic temperatures. Since these resonators are put through a series of metallurgical and chemical processes, the number of impurities in the solid increases in tens of ppm. Upon operational conditions ~1.6 K, Nb become vulnerable to H atoms ordering, which leads to the nucleation of secondary phases such as Nb-hydrides. Thereupon to the energy dissipation and eventually to the superconductivity breakdown known as Q-disease and potentially High-Field Q-slope. In this contribution, we present a detailed structural analysis by high-energy grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction of specimens extracted from 3D Nb resonators to shed light on the kinetic formation of the resulting secondary phases and their crystal phase identification upon cooling and heating cycles. To our knowledge, this is the first study carried out in resonators samples using a light source, shallow angles and temperatures near ~4 K. Consequently, this work opens new routes to understand the chemical and phase composition, crystal and electronic structure of the Nb surface at temperatures near the operating conditions as a strategy to improve the physical and functional properties of Nb superconducting resonators.

Preservation of the High Quality Factor and Accelerating Gradient of Nb3Sn-coated Cavity During Pair Assembly

Two CEBAF 5-cell accelerator cavities have been coated with Nb3Sn film using the vapor diffusion technique. One cavity was coated in the Jefferson Lab Nb3Sn cavity coating system, and the other in the Fermilab Nb3Sn coating system. Both cavities were measured at 4 K and 2 K in the vertical dewar test in each lab and then assembled into a cavity pair at Jefferson Lab. Previous attempts to assemble Nb3Sn cavities into a cavity pair degraded the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn-coated cavities. This contribution discusses the efforts to identify and mitigate the pair assembly challenges and will present the results of the vertical tests before and after pair assembly. Notably, one of the cavities reached the highest gradient above 80 mT in the vertical test after the pair assembly.
