Toward Qualifications of HB and LB 650 MHz Cavities for the Prototype Cryomodules for the PIP-II Project

High-beta (HB) and low-beta (LB) 650 MHz cryomodules are key components of the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project. In this contribution we present the results of several 5-cell HB650 cavities that have been processed and tested with the purpose of qualifying them for the prototype cryomodule assembly, which will take place later this year. We also present the first results obtained in LB650 single-cell cavities process optimization. Taking advantage of their very similar geometry, we are also analyzing the effect of different surface treatments in FRIB’s 5-cell medium-beta 644MHz cavities. Cavities processed with N-doping and mid-T baking showed very promising results in term of both Q-factors and accelerating gradient for these low-beta structures.

STC Qualification Tests of PIP-II HB650 Cavities

Design of the high beta 650 MHz prototype cryomodule for PIP-II is currently undergoing at Fermilab. The cryomodule includes six 5-cell elliptical SRF cavities with accelerating voltage up to 20 MV and low heat dissipation (Q₀ > 3.3 · 10^{z}EhNZeHn). Characterization of performance of fully integrated jacketed cavities with high power coupler and tuner is crucial for the project. Such a characterization of jacketed cavity requires a horizontal test cryostat. The Fermilab Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) has been upgraded to accommodate testing of 650 MHz cavities. Commissioning of upgraded STC has been reported at SRF’19 conference. In this paper we present results of testing of the prototype HB650 cavity in upgraded STC facility. We characterize cavity performance and qualify it for the prototype HB650 cryomodule assembly.

Nb3Sn Coating of Twin Axis Cavity for SRF Applications

The twin axis cavity with two identical accelerating beams has been proposed for Energy recovery linac (ERL) applications. Nb3Sn is a superconducting material with a higher critical temperature and a higher critical field as compared to Nb, which promises a lower operating cost due to higher quality factors. Two niobium twin axis cavities fabricated at JLab and were proposed to be coated with Nb3Sn. Due to their more complex geometry, the typical coating process used for basic elliptical cavities needs to be improved to coat these cavities. This devel-opment advances the current coating system at JLab for coating complex cavities. Two twin axis cavities were coated recently for the first time. This contribution dis-cusses initial results from coating of twin axis cavities, RF testing and witness sample analysis with an overview of the current challenges towards high performance Nb3Sn coated twin axis cavities.

Searches for New Particles, Dark Matter, and Gravitational Waves with SRF Cavities

This is a Snowmass white paper on the utility of existing and future superconducting cavities to probe fundamental physics. Superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity technology has seen tremendous progress in the past decades, as a tool for accelerator science. With advances spear-headed by the SQMS center at Fermilab, they are now being brought to the quantum regime becoming a tool in quantum science thanks to the high degree of coherence. The same high quality factor can be leveraged in the search for new physics, including searches for new particles, dark matter, including the QCD axion, and gravitational waves. We survey some of the physics opportunities and the required directions of R&D. Given the already demonstrated integration of SRF cavities in large accelerator systems, this R&D may enable larger scale searches by dedicated experiments.

Status of PIP-II 650 MHz Prototype Dressed Cavity Qualification

Low-beta and high-beta sections of PIP-II linac will use nine low-beta cryomodules with four cavities each and four high-beta cryomodules with six cavities each. These cavities will be produced and qualified in collaboration between Fermilab and the international partner labs. Prior to their installation into prototype cryomodules, several dressed cavities, which include jacketed cavities, high power couplers, and tuners, will be qualified in STC horizontal test bed at Fermilab. After qualification of bare β = 0.9 cavities at Fermilab, several pre-production β = 0.92 and β = 0.61 cavities have been and are being fabricated and qualified. Procurements have also been started for high power couplers and tuners. In this contribution we present the current status of prototype dressed cavity qualification for PIP-II.

Simulations of Nb$_3$Sn Layer RF Field Limits Due to Thermal Impedance

Nb3Sn performance in RF fields is limited to fields far below its superheating critical field. Poor thermal conductivity of Nb3Sn has been speculated to be the reason behind this limit. In order to better understand the contribution of Nb3Sn thermal conductivity to its RF performance, we simulated numerically with Matlab program*(based on SRIMP and HEAT codes) thelimiting fields under different realistic conditions. Our simulations indicate that limiting fields observed presently in the experiments with RF fields cannot be explained by the thermal impedance of Nb3Sn alone. The results change significantly in the presence of higher losses due to extrinsic mechanisms.

Fabrication and Radio Frequency Properties of 3-GHz SRF Cavities Coated with MgB 2

Magnesium diboride (MgB 2 ) is considered a potential material for superconducting radio frequency cavities. MgB 2 coated Cu cavity will allow for a higher operational temperature than a bulk Nb cavity because of the higher transition temperature of MgB 2 and the high thermal conductivity of Cu. Using the hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition technique, MgB 2 coatings were successfully achieved on the inner wall of 3-GHz Cu cavities. The surface and superconducting properties of the coatings were characterized using small samples on Cu plugs mounted at different locations of mock cavities. RF measurement of a MgB 2 coated single-cell 3-GHz test cavity was carried out and it showed superconducting transition at 36 K. Here, the quality factor of this test cavity was lower than expected due to poor connectivity and inclusion of Mg-Cu alloy in the MgB 2 coating.
