REDC Process Instrumentation Modernization Project

Critical electronics used for isotopes production have become outdated and difficult to manufacture. In particular the alpha-particle and neutron detection electronics (commonly referred to as Q2809A-9 and -11) which are used to monitor effluent activity in ORNL Building 7920 were designed and deployed in 1966-67. These electronics are still used but some parts are no longer available for purchase. In addition, the printed circuit boards used in the Count Rate Monitor (CRM) module have no fabrication files or quality assurance documentation. In light of this, a project to modernize the modules for ability to manufacture with modern parts was undertaken. Both the preamplifier and CRM were modernized with new printed circuit boards and parts which are current catalog parts. In addition, QA documentation was generated which allows the manufacturer to assure proper operation prior to delivery.

Recent progress in shattered pellet injection technology in support of the ITER disruption mitigation system*

Shattered pellet injection (SPI) has been selected as the baseline technology for the disruption mitigation (DM) system for ITER. Typical SPI utilizes cryogenic cooling to desublimate low pressure (<100 mbar) gases onto a cold zone within a pipe gun barrel, forming a cylindrical pellet. Pellets are dislodged from the barrel and accelerated using either a gas driven mechanical punch or high-pressure light-gas delivered by a fast-opening valve. SPI technology developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is currently deployed and operational on DIII-D, JET, and KSTAR. These SPI systems are used in experiments for physics scaling to ITER thermal mitigation and runaway electron dissipation/avoidance. The pellet sizes used for these machines are in the range of 4 to 12.5 mm in diameter with length to diameter ratios (L/D) of ~1.5. The current plan for ITER SPI is to utilize pellets that are 28.5 mm in diameter with an L/D of ~2. Furthermore, the large pellet sizes, high steady-state magnetic fields, and limitations of operating in a radiation environment render much of the current technology unusable. In addition to technology improvements, a deeper understanding of pellet material properties, formation, and release is being developed for implementation in future SPI designs, specifically ITER.

A Sub-Threshold Low-Power Integrated Bandpass Filter for Highly-Integrated Spectrum Analyzers

Low-power analog filter banks provide frequency analysis with minimal power and space requirements, making them viable solutions for integrated remote audio- and vibration-sensing applications. Compared with their digital counterparts, analog filter banks are better suited to achieve the lower power consumption necessary for IoT applications. In this work, the design and implementation of a sub-threshold complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated low-power tunable bandpass filter channel for signal spectrum analysis and signal discrimination is presented, including performance improvements to stability and precise matching between filter stages. The 8 th -order filter channel achieves an effective Q-factor of 4.5 and dynamic range of 60 dB, has an operational frequency range from 2 kHz to 100 kHz, and consumes 256 µW nominally at the highest center frequency. An integrated analog Gm-C filter topology is selected for this application. Functionally, the high-Q bandpass filter transfer function is implemented via four cascaded 2 nd -order filter cells and is fabricated in 130-nm 1.2-V CMOS technology, making it suitable for use in monolithic integrated spectral analysis (MISA) applications.
