A versatile X-ray phase retarder for lock-in XMCD measurements

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is a technique commonly used to probe magnetic properties of materials with element and orbital selectivity, which requires the use of circularly polarized (CP) X-rays. It is possible to accomplish XMCD experiments with fixed CP and alternating the magnetic field orientation, but most reliable data are obtained when alternating the magnetization orientation and the polarization between right and left helicities. A versatile strategy has been developed to perform XMCD experiments using a hard X-ray quarter-wave plate, at both polychromatic dispersive and conventional monochromatic optics, in combination with synchronous data acquisition. The switching frequency waveform is fed into a lock-in amplifier to detect and amplify the XMCD signal. The results on a reference sample demonstrate an improvement in data quality and acquisition time. The instrumentation successfully generated 98% of CP X-rays switching the beam helicity at 13 Hz, with the possibility of faster helicity switching once it is installed at the new Brazilian fourth-generation source, SIRIUS.

Possible Quantum Paramagnetism in Compressed Sr 2 IrO 4

The result of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr 2 IrO 4 is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO 2 layers is easily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17–20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between J eff = 1 / 2 magnetic moments within the insulating IrO 2 layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr 2 IrO 4 , opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended 5 d orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Magnetism of Ir 5 + -based double perovskites: Unraveling its nature and the influence of structure

A combination of x-ray-diffraction, x-ray absorption, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, macroscopic magnetization, and muon-spin relaxation measurements is used to investigate the interplay between structure (both crystallography and microstructure) and magnetism in Sr 2 YIrO 6 as a function of both chemical (Ca-doping) and physical (hydrostatic) pressure. X-ray absorption spectroscopy clearly shows that the physical pressure is more effective in modifying the structure. On the other hand, the dichroic measurements evidence a constant magnetic signal with physical pressure and strong differences with Ca-doping. Muon-spin relaxation reveals the presence of magnetic order, even when this is hidden in the magnetization data. From the combined analysis, the magnetic results are explained in terms of the presence of Ir 6+ or Ir 4+ ions in magnetic clusters, most likely located at and triggered by antisite disorder. The measurements under high physical pressure indicate that the magnetic state is independent of the crystallographic details such as Ir-O distances and Ir-O-Y angles.
