Molten Flux Synthesis of Plutonium (IV) Silicates K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 and Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15

Few plutonium containing silicates have been reported in the literature and only one other tetravalent plutonium silicate structure has been reported using the flux growth method. With the goal of understanding actinide incorporation into silicates, we describe herein two new plutonium (IV) silicates, Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 and K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 , synthesized using a mixed alkali chloride/alkali fluoride flux growth. Both structures crystallize in the C2/c space group with lattice parameters a=24.2980(10) Å, b=7.1466(3) Å, c=17.2025(8) Å and $\blacksquare$96.6560(10)° for Rb 2 PuSi 6 O 15 , and a=9.9478(2) Å, b=5.59820 (10) Å, c=13.1848(2) Å, and $\blacksquare$105.7400(10)° for K 2 PuSi 2 O 7 . Comparisons to the synthesis of other reported alkali actinide silicates (Ce, U, and Th) are made. Raman spectra and DFT calculations of formation enthalpies and vibrational modes provide confirmation of structure refinements and enhanced product characterization for comparison with other materials.

Gallium‐Doping Effects on Structure, Lithium‐Conduction, and Thermochemical Stability of Li 7‐3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 Garnet‐Type Electrolytes

Abstract One of the most promising electrolytes for all‐solid‐state lithium batteries is Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 . Previously, their thermodynamic stability, Li‐ion conductivity, and structural features induced by Ga‐doping have not been empirically determined or correlated. Here, their interplay was examined for Li 7−3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 with target x Ga=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 atoms per formula unit (apfu). Formation enthalpies, obtained with calorimetry and found to be exothermic at all compositions, linearly decreased in stability with increased x Ga. At dilute x Ga substitution, the formation enthalpy curve shifted stepwise endothermically, and the conductivity increased to a maximum, coinciding with 0.529 Ga apfu. This correlated with percolation threshold analysis (0.558 Ga apfu). Further substitution (0.787 Ga apfu) produced a large decrease in the stability and conductivity due to a large increase in point defects and blocked Li‐migration pathways. At x Ga=1.140 apfu, a small exothermic shift was related to defect cluster organization extending the Li hopping distance and decreased Li‐ion conductivity.

Enthalpy of Uranium Adsorption onto Hematite

The influence of temperature on the adsorption of metal-ions at the solid-water interface is often overlooked, despite the important role that adsorption plays in metal ion fate and transport in the natural environment where temperatures vary widely. Herein, we examine the temperature-dependent adsorption of uranium, a widespread radioactive contaminant, onto the ubiquitous iron oxide, hematite. The multi-temperature batch adsorption data and surface complexation models indicate that adsorption of uranium, as the hexavalent uranyl (UO 2 2+ ) ion, increases significantly with increasing temperature, with an adsorption enthalpy (ΔH ads ) of +71 kJ mol –1 . We suggest that this endothermic, entropically-driven adsorption behavior is linked to reorganization of the uranyl-ion-hydration and interfacial water structures upon U VI adsorption at the hematite surface. Altogether, this work provides fundamental insight into the thermodynamics driving metal-ion adsorption reactions and provides the specific enthalpy value necessary for improved predictive geochemical modeling of U VI adsorption in the environment.
