Small‐Molecule Mixed Ionic‐Electronic Conductors for Efficient N‐Type Electrochemical Transistors: Structure‐Function Correlations

Abstract The fundamental challenge in electron‐transporting organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIECs) is simultaneous optimization of electron and ion transport. Beginning from Y6‐type/U‐shaped non‐fullerene solar cell acceptors, we systematically synthesize and characterize molecular structures that address the aforementioned challenge, progressively introducing increasing numbers of oligoethyleneglycol (OEG; g) sidechains from 1 g to 3 g, affording OMIECs 1gY, 2gY, and 3gY, respectively. The crystal structure of 1gY preserves key structural features of the Y n series: a U‐shaped/planar core, close π–π molecular stacking, and interlocked acceptor groups. Versus inactive Y6 and Y11, all of the new glycolated compounds exhibit mixed ion‐electron transport in both conventional organic electrochemical transistor (cOECT) and vertical OECT (vOECT) architectures. Notably, 3gY with the highest OEG density achieves a high transconductance of 16.5 mS, an on/off current ratio of ~10 6 , and a turn‐on/off response time of 94.7/5.7 ms in vOECTs. Systematic optoelectronic, electrochemical, architectural, and crystallographic analysis explains the superior 3gY‐based OECT performance in terms of denser n gY OEG content, increased crystallite dimensions with decreased long‐range crystalline order, and enhanced film hydrophilicity which facilitates ion transport and efficient redox processes. Finally, we demonstrate an efficient small‐molecule‐based complementary inverter using 3gY vOECTs, showcasing the bioelectronic applicability of these new small‐molecule OMIECs.

Trifluoromethylation of 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides: A Mild Functionalization and Tunable p‐Type Doping Method

Chemical modification is a powerful strategy for tuning the electronic properties of 2D semiconductors. Here, in this study, we report the electrophilic trifluoromethylation of 2D WSe2 and MoS 2 under mild conditions using the reagent trifluoromethyl thianthrenium triflate (TTT). Chemical characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the trifluoromethyl groups bind covalently to surface chalcogen atoms as well as oxygen substitution sites. Trifluoromethylation induces p-type doping in the underlying 2D material, enabling the modulation of charge transport and optical emission properties in WSe 2 . This work introduces a versatile and efficient method for tailoring the optical and electronic properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides.

Enhanced Optical Contrast and Switching in Near‐Infrared Electrochromic Devices by Optimizing Conjugated Polymer Oligo(Ethylene Glycol) Sidechain Content and Gel Electrolyte Composition

Abstract A detailed investigation addressing the effects of functionalizing conjugated polymers with oligo(ethylene glycol) (EG n ) sidechains on the performance and polymer‐electrolyte compatibility of electrochromic devices (ECDs) is reported. The electrochemistry for a series of donor‐acceptor copolymers having near‐infrared (NIR)‐optical absorption, where the donor fragment is 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) or an EG n functionalized bithiophene (g2T) and the acceptor fragment is diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) functionalized with branched alkyl or EG n sidechains, is extensively probed. ECDs are next fabricated and it is found that EG n sidechain incorporation must be finely balanced to promote polymer‐electrolyte compatibility and provide efficient ion exchange. Proper electrolyte‐cation pairing and polymer structural tuning affords a 2x increase in optical contrast (from 12% to 24%) and >60x reduction in switching time (from 20 to 0.3 s). Atomic force microscopy (AFM)/grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) characterization of the polymer film morphology/microstructure reveals that an over‐abundance of EG n sidechains generates large polymer crystallites, which can suppress ion exchange. Lastly, time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) indicates sidechain/electrolyte identity does not influence the electrolyte penetration depth into the films, and EG n sidechain inclusion increases electrolyte cation uptake. The material structural design insight and guidelines regarding the polymer‐electrolyte ion insertion/expulsion dynamics reported here should be of significant utility for developing next‐generation mixed ionic‐electronic conducting materials.

Anthradithiophene (ADT)-Based Polymerized Non-Fullerene Acceptors for All-Polymer Solar Cells

Realizing efficient all-polymer solar cell (APSC) acceptors typically involves increased building block synthetic complexity, hence potentially unscalable syntheses and/or prohibitive costs. Here we report the synthesis, characterization, and implementation in APSCs of three new polymer acceptors P1–P3 using a scalable donor fragment, bis(2-octyldodecyl)anthra[1,2-b : 5,6-b’]dithiophene-4,10-dicarboxylate (ADT) co-polymerized with the high-efficiency acceptor units, NDI, Y6, and IDIC. Further, all three copolymers have comparable photophysics to known polymers; however, APSCs fabricated by blending P1, P2 and P3 with donor polymers PM5 and PM6 exhibit modest power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), with the champion P2-based APSC achieving PCE=5.64 %. Detailed morphological and microstructural analysis by AFM and GIWAXS reveal a non-optimal APSC active layer morphology, which suppresses charge transport. Despite the modest efficiencies, these APSCs demonstrate the feasibility of using ADT as a scalable and inexpensive electron rich/donor building block for APSCs.

Air-stable ternary organic solar cells achieved by using fullerene additives in non-fullerene acceptor-polymer donor blends

Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on donor–acceptor blends have shown a rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) now approaching, for small cells, those of the state-of-the art commercial solar modules. However, performance degradation remains one of the most critical impediments for OSC technology commercialization. Ternary solar cells where a third component, for instance an acceptor, is added to a non-fullerene acceptor–polymer donor blend are an effective approach for improving both OSC efficiency and long-term stability. Here, in this work, we study the role of two fullerene acceptors, ET18 and PCBM, as the third component in P D :Y6 blends. These fullerene derivatives significantly enhance the cell stability, which retained >90% of their initial PCEs (13–14%) even after storage in air for 6 months, compared to only ~20% retention for the binary devices. GIWAXS, AFM, in situ impedance spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal that the enhanced stability of the ternary devices results from a more robust blend morphology reducing charge recombination in the ternary devices during aging.

Quantitative relationships between film morphology, charge carrier dynamics, and photovoltaic performance in bulk-heterojunction binary vs. ternary acceptor blends

Addressing pertinent and perplexing questions regarding why nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) promote higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than traditional fullerenes and how photoactive bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film morphology, charge photogeneration, and recombination dynamics dictate solar cell performance have stimulated many studies of polymer solar cells (PSCs), yet quantitative relationships remain limited. Better understanding in these areas offers the potential to advance materials design and device engineering, afford higher PCEs, and ultimate commercialization. Here we probe quantitative relationships between BHJ film morphology, charge carrier dynamics, and photovoltaic performance in model binary and ternary blend systems having a wide bandgap donor polymer, a fullerene, and a promising NFA. We show that optimal PC 71 BM incorporation in a PBDB-TF:ITIC-Th binary system matrix retains the original π-face-on orientation, ITIC-Th crystallinity and BHJ film crystallite dimensions, and reduces film upper surface ITIC-Th segregation. Such morphology changes together simultaneously increase hole (μ h ) and electron (μ e ) mobilities, facilitate light-activated ITIC-Th to PC 71 BM domain electron delocalization, reduce free charge carrier (FC) bimolecular recombination (BR) within PBDB-TF:ITIC-Th mixed regions, and increase FC extraction pathways viaPBDB-TF:PC 71 BM pairs. The interplay of these effects yields significantly enhanced inverted cell short-circuit current density (J SC ), fill factor (FF), and PCE. Unexpectedly, we also find that excessive PC 71 BM in the PBDB-TF:ITIC-Th binary system alters the PBDB-TF orientation to π-edge-on, increases large scale PC 71 BM-rich aggregations and BHJ upper surface PC 71 BM composition. Further, these morphology changes increase parasitic decay processes such as intersystem crossing from photoexcited PC 71 BM, compromising the J SC , FF, and PCE metrics. ITIC-Th X-ray diffraction reveals a unique sidechain-dominated molecular network with previously unknown sidechain-end group stacking, rationalizing the STEM and GIWAXS results, photophysics, and the high μ e . DFT computation reveals charge transfer networks within ITIC-Th crystallites, supporting excited-state electron delocalization from ITIC-Th to PC 71 BM. This structure–property understanding leads to a newly reported NFA blend with PCE near 17%.

π-Extension and chlorination of non-fullerene acceptors enable more readily processable and sustainable high-performance organic solar cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) processed without halogenated solvents and complex treatments are essential for future commercialization. Herein, we report three novel small molecule acceptors (NFAs) consisting of a Y6-like core but with π-extended naphthalene with progressively more chlorinated end-capping groups and a longer branched chain on the Nitrogen atom. These NFAs exhibit good solubilities in non-chlorinated organic solvents, broad optical absorptions, close π-π stacking distances (3.63–3.84 Å), and high electron mobilities (~10 -3 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ). Further, the o-xylene processed and as-cast binary devices using PM6 as the donor polymer exhibit a PCE increasing upon progressive chlorination of the naphthalene end-capping group from 8.93% for YN to 14.38% for YN-Cl to 15.00% for YN-2Cl. Furthermore similarly processed ternary OSCs were fabricated by employing YN-Cl and YN-2Cl as the third component of PM6:CH1007 blends (PCE = 15.75%). Compared to all binary devices, the ternary PM6:CH1007:YN-Cl (1:1:0.2) and PM6:CH1007:YN-2Cl (1:1:0.2) cells exhibit significantly improved PCEs of 16.49% and 15.88%, respectively, which are among the highest values reported to date for non-halogenated solvent processed OSCs without using any additives and blend post-deposition treatments.

An Anthradithiophene Donor Polymer for Organic Solar Cells with a Good Balance between Efficiency and Synthetic Accessibility

Over the past few years, the organic photovoltaics technology (OPV) has reached remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), mostly thanks to the advent of nonfullerene acceptors as well as to a high level of materials engineering. Yet, the complex materials syntheses behind these results ultimately limit technological readiness. The quest for scalable organic compounds offering high PCE and reasonably low synthetic complexity is a must to close the gap between laboratory R&D and commercial products. The synthesis and full characterization of a new conjugated polymer called PATTD is reported herein, based on a novel anthradithiophene as an electron–rich building block coupled with a commercially available dithienylbenzodithiophenedione as an electron–withdrawing comonomer. Its photovoltaic properties are studied in blends with IT–4F and IDIC as acceptors. PATTD:IT–4F–based photovoltaic devices exhibit a PCE approaching 10% and over 2300 h shelf–life stability. Finally, the PATTD scalability factor (SF), together with the PATTD–based photovoltaic performances, lead to a PCE/SF value equal to 0.297, placing such devices into the innermost circle of OPV materials, achieving one of the best compromises between efficiency and synthetic complexity and at the same time offering promising industrial perspectives.

Semiconducting Copolymers with Naphthalene Imide/Amide π‐Conjugated Units: Synthesis, Crystallography, and Systematic Structure‐Property‐Mobility Correlations

Abstract In a series of n‐type semiconducting naphthalene tetracarboxydiimide ( NDI )‐dithiophene ( T2 ) copolymers, structural and electronic properties trends are systematically evaluated as the number of NDI carbonyl groups is reduced from 4 in NDI to 3 in NBL (1‐amino‐4,5‐8‐naphthalene‐tricarboxylic acid‐1,8‐lactam‐4,5‐imide) to 2 in NBA (naphthalene‐bis(4,8‐diamino‐1,5‐dicarboxyl)‐amide). As the NDI ‐ T2 backbone torsional angle falls the LUMO energy rises. However, the thienyl attachment regiochemistry also plays an important role in less symmetric NBL and NBA . Electron mobility is greatest for N2200 (0.17 cm 2 V −1 s −1 ) followed by PNBL‐3,8‐T2 and PNBA‐2,6‐T2 (0.11 cm 2 V −1 s −1 ), 0.02 cm 2 V −1 s −1 in PNBL‐4,8‐T2 , and negligible in PNBA‐3,7‐T2 . Charge transport reflects a delicate balance between electronic backbone communication (optimum for N2200 and PNBL‐4,8‐T2 ), backbone planarity (optimum for PNBA‐2,6‐T2 and PNBL‐3,8‐T2 ), LUMO energy (optimum for N2200 ), π–π stacking distance (optimum for PNBA‐2,6‐T2 ), and film crystallinity (optimum for PNBA‐2,6‐T2 and N2200 ). These results offer generalizable insight into semiconducting copolymer design.

2,3-Diphenylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazines as Hole-Transporting Materials for Stable, High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

High-performance and durable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have advanced rapidly, enabled in part by the development of superior interfacial hole-transporting layers (HTLs). Here, in this study, a new series of 2,3-diphenylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (DPTP)-based small molecules containing bis- and tetrakis-triphenyl amino donors (1–3) was synthesized from simple, low-cost, and readily available starting materials. The matched energy levels, ideal surface topographies, high hole mobilities of 8.57 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 S –1 , and stable chemical structures of DPTP-4D (3) make it an effective hole-transporting material, delivering a PCE of 20.18% with high environmental, thermal, and light-soaking stability when compared to the reference HTL materials, doped Spiro-OMeTAD and PTAA in PSC n-i-p planar devices. Overall, these DPTP-based molecules are promising HTM candidates for the fabrication of stable PSCs.

Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with strain-resistant performance

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30-140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. In this work, the prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor-acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 10(4) stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness. Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with stable charge transport under severe tensional strains are demonstrated using a honeycomb semiconducting polymer morphology, thereby enabling controllable signal output for diverse stretchable bioelectronic applications.
