Intermetallic Ni 3 Ga 1 Catalyst for Efficient Ammonia Reforming of Light Alkane

Ammonia reforming of light alkane is conventionally employed for HCN production where coproduct H 2 is burned for heating owing to the high reaction temperature (1200 °C) of such a highly endothermic process. Here, in this study, we show that a Ni 3 Ga 1 intermetallic compound (IMC) catalyst is highly efficient for such a reaction, realizing efficient conversion of C1–C3 alkanes at 575–750 °C. This makes it feasible for on-purpose CO x -free H 2 production assuming that ammonia, as an H 2 carrier, is ubiquitously available from renewable energy. At 650 °C and an alkane/ammonia ratio of 1/2, ethane and propane conversion of ~20% and methane conversion of 13% were obtained (with nearly 100% HCN selectivity for methane and ethane) over the unsupported Ni 3 Ga 1 IMC, which also shows high stability due to the absence of coke deposition. This breakthrough is achieved by employing a stoichiometric Ni 3 Ga 1 mixed oxalate solid solution as the precursor for the Ni 3 Ga 1 IMC.

Ammonia-Assisted Light Alkane Anti-coke Reforming on Isolated ReO x Sites in Zeolite

The conventional reforming produces H 2 with stoichiometric amounts of CO and CO 2 from hydrocarbons. Here, we show that CO x -free H 2 can be produced from ammonia-assisted reforming (ammoreforming) of natural gas liquids (C n H 2n+2 + nNH 3 = nHCN + (2n + 1) H 2 , n = 2 or 3) at the same conditions as the steam reforming. Such a process co-produces HCN, which can be easily separated from H 2 and used as value-added chemicals or for NH 3 recycling through hydrolysis. In addition, the ammoreforming of ethane and propane was realized over the Re-modified HZSM-5 zeolite rather than the traditional Pt-based catalyst for the BMA process (methane ammoreforming). The specific activity of the Re/HZSM-5 catalysts at 650 °C is up to 1 mol H2 /g Re /min (or 180 min –1 ) during ethane ammoreforming. The catalyst is highly coke resistant and shows only slight deactivation with a time-on-stream up to 20 h. Characterization of the fresh and used catalysts by X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopies suggested that the isolated ReO x site grafted by AlO 4 – tetrahedral in the zeolite framework is responsible for the outstanding catalytic activity and coke resistibility.

Catalytic Light Alkanes Conversion through Anaerobic Ammodehydrogenation

Catalytic transformation of light alkanes could have considerable practical value, yet remains one of the most challenging areas in catalysis research due to the inertness of the C–H bond. Here, we proposed an efficient ammodehydrogenation (ADeH) catalytic system for the direct C–N linkage between light alkanes and ammonia for CH 3 CN and H 2 (CO x free) production. This breakthrough is achieved over bifunctional metal-modified HZSM-5 catalysts, through the tandem dehydrogenation–amination–dehydrogenation mechanism. We show that ethane ADeH over the Pt/HZSM-5 catalyst can be realized under atmospheric pressure at temperatures as low as 350 °C. The specific rate of CH 3 CN is ~60 μmol/(g min), and the selectivity is up to 99% under such mild conditions. The yield of CH 3 CN increases with increasing temperature; however, the selectivity decreases due to the formation of HCN, C 2 H 4 , and CH 4 . Additionally, the Pt/HZSM-5 catalyst is coke-resistant during the ADeH owing to the strong interaction between NH 3 and the acid sites of the catalyst. So, we anticipate that the proposed ADeH could be extended for the transformation of various n/iso-alkanes with tunable selectivity to alkene and nitriles.

Nickel/gallium modified HZSM-5 for ethane aromatization: Influence of metal function on reactivity and stability

Bimetallic catalysts often outperform their monometallic counterparts due to the synergistic effect. Here we reported that the Ni/Ga co-functionalized HZSM-5 catalyst, specifically with Ni 1 /Ga 1 stoichiometric ratio, shows significantly improved selectivity (above 80 %) and stability than the Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst and higher activity (with identical selectivity) than the Ga/HZSM-5 catalyst in ethane aromatization. According to the transient experiment, the Ga and Ni 1 Ga 1 /HZSM-5 catalysts show an induction period of a few minutes. However, for Ni/HZSM-5 and Ni 1 Ga 1/3 /HZSM-5, the induction period increased to >10 min and >30 min, respectively, where up to 100 % of ethane was converted into methane and coke through cracking/hydrogenolysis. Furthermore, based on the generalized power-law equation model, a modified model for deactivation kinetic was proposed. Consequently, the influence of the metal function on the kinetic parameters was discussed. We anticipate the formation of Ni 3 Ga intermetallic alloy and its synergy with the exchanged Ga δ+ to be responsible for optimal BTX formation.
