Pick-up ion pressure gradients modulating the solar wind dynamics

Neutral interstellar atoms penetrate deeply into the inner heliosphere before they become ionized by various processes. As ions they are picked-up by the frozen-in magnetic fields and are convected outwards with the solar wind plasma. Thereby the primary plasma flow is mass, momentum, and energy-loaded. The dynamics of the distant multi-constituent solar wind is, however, not solely determined by these loading processes, but is also affected by the wave-mediated pick-up ion pressure gradients derivable from the pick-up ion distribution function. The action of the radial components of these pressures essentially counter balances the decelerating effect of the solar wind momentum loading, diminishing strongly the deceleration of the distant solar wind. Furthermore the latitudinal components of the pick-up ion pressures induce latitudinal forces acting on the multiconstituent solar plasma outflow and inducing nonradial bulk flow components. The enforced nonradial outflow geometry on the upwind hemisphere may partly be responsible for the magnetic flux deficit which was claimed since several years in the PIONEER-10 magnetic flux data.

An Approximate Solution for the Circumsolar Flow Field of a Sun Moving Through the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM)

The solar system is in relative motion with respect to the ambient interstellar medium. The supersonic solar wind is expected to pass through the termination shock, thus the solar wind plasma eventually has to enter into an asymptotic outflow geometry appropriately adopted to this counterflow situation. Many attempts have been done to simulate the interaction between the solar wind and the LISM numerically. In this paper we generalize a Parker type analytical solution of the counterflow. The idea is to introduce a special kind of compressibility of the solar wind flow. With the assumption that only a transversal component of the density gradient normal to the flow lines exists we are able to calculate a full set of hydrodynamical quantities describing the circumsolar flow field of a Sun moving through the LISM. The equations governing the velocity and density fields lead to analytical solutions which can be taken as good approximations to the more general case of compressible plasma flows.

A new observational approach to investigate the heliospheric interstellar wind interface - The study of extreme and far ultraviolet resonantly scattered solar radiation from neon, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen

One of the outstanding uncertainties in the understanding of the heliosphere concerns the character of the interaction between the outflowing solar wind and the interstellar medium. A new possibility for obtaining information on this topic is suggested. The cosmically abundant elements neon, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen will be affected differently at their interface passage depending upon the character of this region. Consequently, the distribution of these atoms and their ions will vary within the inner heliosphere. The study of resonantly scattered solar radiation from these species will then provide information on the nature of the interface. A preliminary evaluation of this approach has been carried out, and the results are encouraging. The relevant lines to be studied are in the extreme and far ulraviolet. The existing data in these bands are reviewed; unfortunately, past instrumentation has had insufficient resolution and sensitivity to provide useful information. The capabilities of future approved missions with capabilities in this area are evaluated.
