Lambda Point Equipment

A compilation of the active research tasks as of the end of the fiscal year 1984 of the Microgravity Science and Applications Program, NASA-Office of Space Science and Applications, involving several NASA centers and other organizations is presented. The purpose is to provide an overview of the program scope for managers and scientists in industry, university, and government communities. An introductory description of the program, strategy and overall goal; identification of the organizational structures and people involved; and a description of each research task, together with a list of recent publications is presented. The tasks are grouped into six categories: Electronic Materials; Solidification of Metals, Alloys, and Composites; Fluid Dynamics and Transports; Biotechnology; Glasses and Ceramics; and Combustion.

To perform a gyro test of general relativity in a satellite and develop associated control technology

A satellite configuration having two gyroscopes with axes parallel to the boresight of a telescope and two at right angles to the telescope and approximately parallel and perpendicular to the earth's axis is proposed for measuring geodetic precessions due to the earth's motion about the sun, higher order geodetic terms calculated from the earth's quadrapole mass moment (0.010 arc-sec/year in a 400 nautical mile polar orbit), and deflection by the sun of the starlight signal for the reference telescope. Data from the experiment also contain large periodic signals due to the annual and orbital aberrations of starlight which are useful in providing a built in reference signal of known amplitude for scaling the relativity signals, and should yield a singularly precise measurement of the parallax of the reference star. The development of the gyroscope and its readout system are discussed, as well as signal integration, drag-free control, and attitude control.

Apparatus for measuring the force of gravity on freely falling electrons

An apparatus and data analysis technique for measuring the gravitational force on freely falling electrons are described. The measurement required that all forces acting on the electrons be uniform and measurable to about ten to the negative 11th power eV/m. The electrical force along the axis of the 5-cm-diam, vertical copper tube used in the experiment was found to be about six times ten to the negative 11th power eV/m when the tube was cooled to 4.2 K. Forces on electrons due to magnetic field gradients were reduced well below the electrical ones by selecting only ground state electrons for measurement. The absence, at 4.2 K, of much stronger electric fields, which were expected to arise from the patch effect and from differential lattice components, contrasts strongly with measurements of electric fields near metal surfaces made at room temperature.

Perform a gyro test of general relativity in a satellite and develop associated control technology

The progress accomplished in the Stanford Gyro Relativity program during the period November 1974 to October 1975 was described. Gyro developments were continued in the main laboratory dewar, concentrating on the operation of a three axis gyro readout and on improvements to the methods of canceling trapped fields in the rotor; these efforts culminated in the first successful observation of the London moment in the spinning gyro rotor in March 1975. Following a review meeting at that time, a new goal was formulated for the next 12 to 18 months, namely to operate a gyroscope in the new ultra-low field facility with readout resolution approaching 1 arc-second. The following other tasks were also completed: (1) sputtering work, (2) magnetometry, (3) construction and installation of the North Star simulator, (4) analysis of torques on the gyro, especially in inclined orbits, (5) equivalence principle accelerometer, and (6) analysis of a twin-satellite test of relativity.

Precision star-tracking telescope

The design, construction, and preliminary testing of a new high accuracy star tracking telescope for the laboratory model of the Stanford gyro relativity experiment are described. The function of the telescope in the final flight experiment is to define (by reference to a suitable star) a direction in space for comparison with the relativistic precession of a group of gyroscopes. The design of the telescope has been strongly affected by designs for other portions of the overall experiments, for example the gyroscopes, the attitude control system of the satellite, and the instrumentation system used in processing relativity data. Main goals for the star tracker are: (1) independent readout of angular position in two planes; (2) absolute null stability over a one year period of mechanical parts; (3) readout linear to 0.001 arc-seconds over + or - 0.05 arc-second; (4) noise performance leading to a resolution of 0.05 arc-second in 0.1 second observation time of the chosen reference star; and (5) provision for automatic gain control capable of matching the gains of the gyroscopes and telescope readouts to 1% or better.

Some future applications of low temperature technology in space

Low temperature technology applications are presented for relativity experiments, improved signal to noise ratio performance, and helium studies in space. The large scale, low magnetic field facility is described, as well as the principle of the London moment for relativity gyroscopes.
