Low Temperature CO2 Capture from an NGCC Flue Gas Using a Magnetically Stabilized, Inductively Heated Fluidized Bed Reactor

The lab sorbent testing finalized the sorbent composition and operating conditions for the integrated unit. The bench unit design included COMSOL simulation to finalize the coil design and select initial operating conditions of the power supply system. Fluidized bed testing with the induction heating verified that a heating efficiency of up to 90% can be achieved. The integrated bench unit operations provided valuable data confirming the feasibility of using induction heating for the desorption of CO2. Major challenge observed was the limited working capacity of the sorbent, requiring additional development in future projects. In addition, a large-scale reactor demonstration is required to mitigate the risk of uniform temperature distribution and heating efficiency over a large cross-sectional area when using induction heating.

Inverse-designed metasurfaces with facile fabrication parameters

Abstract Optical metasurfaces are planar nanostructured devices that are industrially attractive in part because they utilize high-throughput microelectronic fabrication techniques for implementation. It is therefore critical to develop design paradigms that can balance the realization of highly efficient wavefront responses together with device manufacturability. We introduce a gradient-based design framework for freeform metasurfaces in which nanoscale elements are explicitly constrained to feature basic shapes, nearly uniform feature sizes, and exceptionally low aspect ratios. In spite of the apparent uniformity of the metasurface geometric features, the devices are able to utilize nonlocal near-field optical coupling to achieve highly efficient and extreme wavefront scattering beyond conventional design methodologies. Utilizing this approach, we design facile high-numerical-aperture devices such as beam deflectors and large-area metalenses capable of diffraction-limited focusing. We anticipate that these concepts can facilitate the design and integration of metasurfaces into monolithic optical systems.

Multi-objective, robust constraints enforced global topology optimizer for optical devices

A method for optimization of photonic devices is disclosed. The method includes receiving a set of unconstrained latent variables; mapping the set of unconstrained latent variables to a constrained space to generate a constrained device; calculating the permittivity across each element of the constrained device; determining a permittivity-constrained width gradient based at least partially on the permittivity across each element; and optimizing the set of unconstrained latent variables by at least partially using the permittivity-constrained width gradient.
