Prediction of ambient pressure superconductivity in cubic ternary hydrides with MH 6 octahedra

Exploring high-temperature superconducting (high-T c ) material at ambient pressure holds immense significance for physics, chemistry, and materials science. In this study, we perform a high-throughput screening of strong electron-phonon interactions in X 2 MH 6 compounds (X = Li, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ga, Rb, Sr, and In; M are 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals). These compounds have a cubic structure featuring an MH 6 octahedron motif. Our screening calculations suggest that 26 compounds exhibit dynamic stability and strong electron-phonon coupling. Among them, Mg 2 RhH 6 , Mg 2 IrH 6 , Al 2 MnH 6 , and Li 2 CuH 6 show promising energetic stability and T c of more than 50 K at ambient pressure. This study underscores promising high-T c compounds at ambient pressure with distinctive MH 6 motifs.

Prediction of superconductivity in metallic boron–carbon compounds from 0 to 100 GPa by high-throughput screening

Boron–carbon compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. In our earlier paper [Zheng et al., Phys. Rev. B, 2023, 107, 014508], we identified a new conventional superconductor of LiB 3 C at 100 GPa. Here, we aim to extend the investigation of possible superconductivity in this structural framework by replacing Li atoms with 27 different cations from periods 3, 4, and 5 under pressures ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Using the high-throughput screening method of zone-center electron–phonon interaction, we found that ternary compounds like CaB 3 C, SrB 3 C, TiB 3 C, and VB 3 C are promising candidates for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm that they have a T c of <31 K at moderate pressures. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that fast screening of superconductivity by calculating zone-center electron–phonon coupling strength is an effective strategy for high-throughput identification of new superconductors.

Ground and excited states of even-numbered Hubbard ring at half-filling: comparison of the extended Gutzwiller approach with exact diagonalization

It remains a great challenge in condensed matter physics to develop a method to treat strongly correlated many-body systems with balanced accuracy and efficiency. We introduce an extended Gutzwiller (EG) method incorporating a manifold technique, which builds an effective manifold of the many-body Hilbert space, to describe the ground- and excited-state properties of strongly correlated electrons. Here we systematically apply an EG projector onto the ground and excited states of a non-interacting system. Diagonalization of the true Hamiltonian within the manifold formed by the resulting EG wavefunctions gives the approximate ground and excited states of the correlated system. To validate this technique, we implement it on even-numbered fermionic Hubbard rings at half-filling with periodic boundary conditions, and compare the results with the exact diagonalization (ED) method. The EG method is capable of generating high-quality ground and low-lying excited state wavefunctions, as evidenced by the high overlaps of wavefunctions between the EG and ED methods. Favorable comparisons are also achieved for other quantities including the total energy, the double occupancy, the total spin and the staggered magnetization. With the capability of accessing the excited states, the EG method can capture the essential features of the one-electron removal spectral function that contains contributions from states deep in the excited spectrum. Finally, we provide an outlook on the application of this method on large extended systems.

Superconductivity in the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa

Layer Li-B-C compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. Using the adaptive genetic algorithm, we predict the structures of the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa. Here we identify several low-enthalpy metallic phases with stoichiometries of Li B 2 C, Li B 3 C, Li 2 BC 2 , Li 3 B 2 C 3 , Li 3 BC, and Li 5 BC. Using a fast screening method of electron-phonon interaction, we find that Li B 3 C is a promising candidate for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm the existence of the strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in this system. The anharmonic B-C phonon modes near the zone center provide the major contribution to the EPC. The EPC constant is 1.40, and the estimated critical temperature is 22 K. In this paper, we indicate that superconductivity can also happen without a layered structural motif in the Li-B-C system. We also demonstrate an effective strategy for crystal structure prediction of superconducting materials.

High-Throughput Screening of Strong Electron–Phonon Couplings in Ternary Metal Diborides

Here, we perform a high-throughput screening on phonon-mediated superconductivity in a ternary metal diboride structure with alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metals. We find 17 ground states and 78 low-energy metastable phases. From fast calculations of zone-center electron–phonon coupling, 43 compounds are revealed to show electron–phonon coupling strength higher than that of MgB 2 . An anticorrelation between the energetic stability and electron–phonon coupling strength is identified. We suggest two phases, i.e., Li 3 ZrB 8 and Ca 3 YB 8 , to be synthesized, which show reasonable energetic stability and superconducting critical temperature.

A rotationally invariant approach based on Gutzwiller wave function for correlated electron systems

Here, we introduce a rotationally invariant approach combined with the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method to study correlated electron systems. In the approach, the Gutzwiller projector is parametrized based on the number of electrons occupying the onsite orbitals instead of the onsite configurations. The approach efficiently groups the onsite orbitals according to their symmetry and greatly reduces the computational complexity, which yields a speedup of $20 \sim 50 \times $ in the minimal basis energy calculation of dimers. The computationally efficient approach promotes more accurate calculations beyond the minimal basis that is inapplicable in the original approach. A large-basis energy calculation of F 2 demonstrates favorable agreements with standard quantum-chemical calculations Bytautas et al (2007 J. Chem. Phys. 127 164317).

The Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method for correlated electron systems

In this report we review our recent work on the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method, an ab initio approach developed for correlated electron systems. The complete formalism has been outlined that allows for a systematic understanding of the method, followed by a discussion of benchmark studies of dimers, one- and two-dimensional single-band Hubbard models. In the end, we present some preliminary results of multi-band Hubbard models and large-basis calculations of F 2 to illustrate our efforts to further reduce the computational complexity.

Prediction of crystal structures and motifs in the Fe–Mg–O system at Earth’s core pressures

Abstract Fe, Mg, and O are among the most abundant elements in terrestrial planets. While the behavior of the Fe–O, Mg–O, and Fe–Mg binary systems under pressure have been investigated, there are still very few studies of the Fe–Mg–O ternary system at relevant Earth’s core and super-Earth’s mantle pressures. Here, we use the adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) to study ternary Fe x Mg y O z phases in a wide range of stoichiometries at 200 GPa and 350 GPa. We discovered three dynamically stable phases with stoichiometries FeMg 2 O 4 , Fe 2 MgO 4, and FeMg 3 O 4 with lower enthalpy than any known combination of Fe–Mg–O high-pressure compounds at 350 GPa. With the discovery of these phases, we construct the Fe–Mg–O ternary convex hull. We further clarify the composition- and pressure-dependence of structural motifs with the analysis of the AGA-found stable and metastable structures. Analysis of binary and ternary stable phases suggest that O, Mg, or both could stabilize a BCC iron alloy at inner core pressures.
