Magnetic record in chondrite meteorites

What we know about the magnetic record in chondrite meteorites based on new data and previously published results is summarized. Strips from thin slabs of chondrite meteorites were cut into near cubical subsamples (several mm on edge) numbering approximately 60 to approximately 120 per meteorite. A common orientation was assigned to each subsample from a given meteorite in order to ensure that we could discover the vector makeup of the bulk meteorite. The new data set includes: Shaw (L7), Roy (L5/6), Claytonville (L5), Plainview (H5), Etter (H5), Leoville (C3V), and Allende (C3V). In addition to these new results, literature data of sufficient detail, e.g. Bjurbole (L4), ALH769 (L6), Abee (E4), Allende (C3V), and Olivenza (L5), is considered.

Infrared line intensities of chlorine monoxide

Absolute infrared line intensities of several ClO lines in the rotational-vibrational (1-0) band were measured using infrared heterodyne spectroscopy near 12 microns. A measurement technique using combined ultraviolet absorption and infrared line measurements near 9.5 microns and 12 microns permitted an accurate determination of the column densities of O3 and ClO in the absorption cell and thus improved ClO line intensities. Results indicate ClO line and band intensities approximately 2.4 times lower than previous experimental results. Effects of possible failure of local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions in the absorption cell and the implication of the results for stratospheric ClO measurements in the infrared are discussed.

Infrared heterodyne spectroscopy of seven gases in the vicinity of chlorine monoxide lines

Chlorine monoxide (ClO) is thought to play an important role in a photochemical cycle which causes the destruction of ozone in the earth's stratosphere. Since lines of the (1,0) fundamental of ClO lie near C-14O2-16, laser lines, IR heterodyne spectroscopy is potentially an important technique for monitoring the ClO abundance. However, due to the presence of lines from other trace atmospheric gases in this spectral range, the interpretation of such observations is ambiguous unless high resolution laboratory measurements support the identifications. Measured frequencies are reported for spectral lines of seven trace atmospheric gases which absorb near the C-14O2-16 laser transitions relevant to the detection of ClO by IR heterodyne spectroscopy.

Precision measurements of NH3 spectral lines near 11 microns using the infrared heterodyne technique

Absolute line-center frequencies for eleven lines of ammonia in near coincidence with CO2-laser transitions have been determined to accuracies of + or -3 MHz by infrared heterodyne detection. These results were obtained by heterodyning a blackbody with a stable grating-tuned CO2 gas laser. A discussion of the apparatus and method of calculation, including error analysis, is presented. With these accurately determined line-center positions, the ammonia molecule will be a useful secondary-frequency standard for diode-laser spectroscopy in the 11-micron wavelength region.

Angular distributions and polarization fractions of helium resonance radiation /n 1P-1 1S/ in the extreme ultraviolet

Angular intensity distributions of helium resonance photons, experimentally determined for the first time with respect to the exciting electron beam, are presented. The angular intensity distributions were measured at selected electron-impact energies from 25 to 150 eV. The results obtained are slightly higher than theoretical data for electron impact energies from 80 to 150 eV.

Angular distributions and polarization fractions of helium resonance radiation (n 1P - 1 1S) in the extreme ultraviolet

Angular intensity distributions of helium (n 1P - 1 1S) resonance photons with respect to the exciting electron beam are presented. The angular intensity distributions were measured at selected electron impact energies from 25 eV (near threshold) to 150 eV. Polarization fractions (Pi) were obtained by analyzing the data in terms of the theoretical relation between angular intensity distribution and Pi, i.e. Iota (theta) = Iota (90) (1 - Pi sq cos theta). The experimental values for Pi are compared with recent theoretical results and with previous experimental values for the (3 1P - 2 1S) transition.

Quenching of the B /super 2/Sigma-plus state of the CN radical.

The quenching of the B (super 2)Sigma-plus fluorescence from the CN radical has been studied as a function of the relative velocity of the quenching collision and the total pressure in the fluorescence cell. The rate constant for the quenching of the CN fragment by ICN vapor was found to be directly proportional to the relative velocity of the quenching collision. Electronic quenching was also observed for methane, diatomic hydrogen, Kr, and Ar.
