The new Device for Indirect Capture Experiments on Radionuclides at LANSCE: Efforts on measuring the resonance(s) responsible for the extremely large 88 Zr (n,γ) cross section

The thermal neutron capture cross section of 88 Zr was recently reported to be the second largest in nature with the largest resonance integral measured. Presumably, these very large values are caused by a resonance or resonances very near thermal energy. Determining their energies and widths, and hence the shape of the cross section away from thermal energies,is useful for applications. The short half-life (83.4 days) and associated large background, renders direct measurements of the neutron capture cross section impossible using current techniques. However, it is possible to measure the total neutron cross section, and hence the resonance properties, using the newly commissioned Device for Indirect Capture Experiments on Radionuclides (DICER) at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). Transmission measurements are utilized as a surrogate method to perform capture measurements. The 88 Zr needed for a DICER measurement was produced at the Isotope Production Facility (IPF) and cleanly separated from the production target material. A description of the new instrument, efforts and preliminary results on 88 Zr will be presented.

New capability for indirect neutron capture measurements: The DICER instrument at LANSCE

The Device for Indirect Capture on Radionuclides (DICER) implements a new indirect technique for (n,γ) studies in which the neutron capture rate is determined from analysis of resonance neutron transmission data. The DICER instrument and associated radionuclide production at the Isotope Production Facility (IPF), both at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), as well radioactive sample fabrication, have been under development in the last few years. First measurements on a radioactive sample ( 88 Zr, t ½ =83.4 days), which was recently reported to have an extremely large thermal neutron capture cross section and resonance integral, are planned for the winter of 2021. A performance overview, brief details on the 88Zr fabrication and proof of good operation results will be presented.

225 Ac/ 213 Bi Generator Based on Millifluidics Controlled Electrodeposition

Radioisotopes provide both diagnostic tools and therapeutic treatments for cancer and other diseases. In the US, millions of radioisotope doses are given to patients per year. Radiopharmaceutical generators are widely used to provide such short-lived medical radioisotopes in a clinical setting. These generators work by exploiting chemical differences in a parent/daughter isotope relationship. Actinium-225 (half-life 10 d) is used to provide clinically useful amounts of daughter isotopes 213 Bi (46 m). An integrated millifluidic 225 Ac/ 213 Bi radiopharmaceutical generator device was engineered to produce 213 Bi labeled biomolecules. Using recent LANL successes in additive manufacturing of small-scale fluidic devices, a disposable device was developed that integrates three steps for the production of 213 Bi labeled antibodies: 1) 213 Bi separation from 225 Ac parent, 2) 213 Bi antibody labeling, and 3) purification of the labelled antibody.

Measurement of 227 Ac impurity in 225 Ac using decay energy spectroscopy

225 Ac is a valuable medical radionuclide for targeted $\alpha$ therapy, but 227 Ac is an undesirable byproduct of an accelerator-based synthesis method under investigation. Sufficient detector sensitivity is critical for quantifying the trace impurity of 227 Ac, with the 227 Ac/ 225 Ac activity ratio predicted to be approximately 0.15% by end-of-bombardment (EOB). Superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters offer high resolution energy spectroscopy using the normal-to-superconducting phase transition to measure small changes in temperature. By embedding 225 Ac production samples in a gold foil thermally coupled to a TES microcalorimeter we can measure the decay energies of the radionuclides embedded with high resolution and 100% detection efficiency. This technique, known as decay energy spectroscopy (DES), collapses several peaks from $\alpha$ decays into single Q-value peaks. In practice there are more complex factors in the interpretation of data using DES, which we will discuss in this paper. Using this technique we measured the EOB 227 Ac impurity to be (0.142 ± 0.005)% for a single production sample. This demonstration has shown that DES is a useful tool for quantitative measurements of complicated spectra.

Extraction chromatography of 225 Ac and lanthanides on N,N-dioctyldiglycolamic acid /1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide solvent impregnated resin

The alpha-emitter 225 Ac (t 1/2 = 9.92 d) is currently under development for targeted alpha-particle therapy of cancer, and accelerator production of 225 Ac via proton irradiation of thorium targets requires robust separations of 225 Ac from chemically similar fission product lanthanides. Additionally, the lanthanide elements represent critical components in modern technologies, and radiolanthanides such as 140 Nd (t 1/2 = 3.37 d) also have potential application in the field of nuclear medicine. The ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Bmim][NTf 2 ]), combined with the diglycolamide extractant, N,N-dioctyldiglycolamic acid (DODGAA), was adsorbed on macroporous resin support to produce a solvent impregnated resin (SIR) that was investigated for separations of 225 Ac and lanthanides. The equilibrium distribution coefficients (Kd) of the rare earth elements (Sc(III), Y(III), Ln(III)), 225 Ac(III), Th(IV), and U(VI) on the prepared DODGAA/[Bmim][NTf 2 ]-SIR were determined from batch adsorption experiments in HCl and HNO 3 media. The DODGAA/[Bmim][NTf2]-SIR exhibited preferential uptake of the heavier lanthanide elements while allowing for the separation of the lighter lanthanides. Column separations utilizing the DODGAA/[Bmim][NTf 2 ]-SIR were effective at separating the lighter lanthanides from each other, and separating 225 Ac from a mixture of lanthanides, 213 Bi, and 225 Ra without the need for additional complexing agents.
