Theory of short-scale field-aligned density striations due to ionospheric heating

The theoretical saturation spectrum of parametrically excited Langmuir waves in a locally uniform ionosphere is shown by the present calculations to produce, by ohmic dissipation, short-scale field-aligned density striations. The spectrum of the calculated striations is not inconsistent with observations of field-aligned scatter of VHF and UHF waves in ionospheric modification experiments if local increases of the pump field due to focusing are invoked.

One-dimensional numerical study of charged particle trajectories in turbulent electrostatic wave fields

The paper describes a numerical simulation of electron trajectories in weak random electric fields under conditions that are approximately true for Langmuir waves whose wavelength is much longer than the Debye length. Two types of trajectory calculations were made: (1) the initial particle velocity was made equal to the mean phase velocity of the waves, or (2) it was equal to 0.7419 times the mean velocity of the waves, so that the initial velocity differed substantially from all phase velocities of the wave spectrum. When the autocorrelation time is much greater than the trapping time, the particle motion can change virtually instantaneously from one of three states - high-velocity, low-velocity, or trapped state - to another. The probability of instantaneous transition from a high- or low-velocity state becomes small when the difference between the particle velocity and the mean phase velocity of the waves becomes high in comparison to the trapping velocity. Diffusive motion becomes negligible under these conditions also.

Saturation spectrum of the parametric decay instability in the presence of an external magnetic field

The effects of an external magnetic field on the saturation spectrum of parametric decay instabilities is examined by means of a modification of the Kuo and Fejer (1972) analysis. The main effect of the magnetic field is shown to be a decrease of the wavenumber with increasing angle between the wave vector and the magnetic field, particularly when the pump frequency is near the second harmonic of the cyclotron frequency. The spread of the phase velocities as measured in the direction of the magnetic field is significantly greater in the saturation spectrum when the pump frequency is near the second harmonic of the cyclotron frequency, facilitating the acceleration of tail electrons to energies of a few electron volts. It is suggested that this effect accounts for the greatly enhanced airglow observed (Haslett and Megill, 1974) under these conditions.

Alteration of the ionosphere by man-made waves

In recent years powerful radio wave transmissions beamed at the ionosphere at frequencies somewhat below the penetration frequency of the F2 layer produced the following, mostly unexpected, spectacular effects: (1) artificial spread F seen on ionograms and implying the presence of large scale field-aligned irregularities in the ionospheric plasma density; (2) very strong additional absorption of probing waves reflected by the F2 layer; (3) field-aligned 'on frequency' scattering of UHF waves; (4) scattering of UHF waves by Langmuir waves which are believed to be parametrically excited; (5) the 630 nm airglow is artificially enhanced by a modifying wave of ordinary polarization but it is reduced in intensity by a modifying wave of extraordinary polarization; (6) the shape of the F2 layer is modified. The results of the observations are described and their tentative interpretation in terms of different parametric instabilities is outlined.

Effect of small ionospheric irregularities on radio wave absorption

The ionospheric absorption of a radio wave caused by small-scale irregularities with a gaussian autocorrelation function is calculated for various values of the linear scale height, the radio frequency, the scale size of the irregularities, and the mean-square fractional electron density fluctuations. The absorption is due to scattering of the radio wave into plasma oscillations by the irregularities. It is concluded that the absorption due to such irregularities with a mean-square fractional electron density deviation greater than about 0.000001 exceeds the normal collisional height-integrated absorption. Absorption of this type could play a significant part in heating experiments or in an ionosphere containing naturally occurring irregularities.

Electron acceleration by parametrically excited Langmuir waves

Simple physical arguments are used to estimate the downward-going energetic electron flux due to parametrically excited Langmuir waves in ionospheric modification experiments. The acceleration mechanism is a single velocity reversal as seen in the frame of the Langmuir wave. The flux is sufficient to produce the observed ionospheric airglow if focusing-type instabilities are invoked to produce moderate local enhancements of the pump field.

The saturation spectrum of parametric instabilities

Recent calculations on the nonlinear saturation spectrum of the parametric decay instability are described. The initial calculations did not use the correct expression for the spontaneous emission term and were aimed at obtaining the distribution of spectral energy in the unstable part of wave vector space. Results of those initial calculations are combined here with the correct expression for the spontaneous emission term to obtain the distribution of spectral energy in the stable part of wave vector space. These latter calculations are believed to be relevant to the interpretation of the so called plasma line spectra obtained in ionospheric heating experiments at Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

Generation of large scale field-aligned density irregularities in ionospheric heating experiments

Threshold and growth rate for stimulated Brillouin scattering are calculated for a uniform magnetoplasma. These are then compared with the threshold and growth rate of a new thermal instability in which the nonlinear Lorentz force felt by the electrons at the beat frequency of the two electromagnetic waves is replaced by a pressure force due to differential heating in the interference pattern of the pump wave and the generated electromagnetic wave. This thermal instability, which is still essentially stimulated Brillouin scattering, has a threshold which is especially low when the propagation vector of the beat wave is almost normal to the magnetic field. The threshold is then considerably lower than the threshold for normal stimulated Brillouin scattering and therefore this new instability is probably responsible for the generation of large scale field aligned irregularities and ionospheric spread F.

Structure in the nonlinear saturation spectrum of parametric instabilities.

The nonlinear saturation spectrum of the decay instability is obtained in the limit of small spontaneous emission, for comparable ion and electron temperatures, from numerical solutions of a kinetic equation based on an accurate expression for the nonlinearity. The spectral energy occupies several pairs of isolated saucer-shaped regions in wave-vector space. The regions increase in thickness, angular diameter, and number as the pump power is increased. The theory thus predicts the generation of waves propagating in directions which can differ substantially from the direction of the pump field. Ionospheric observations confirm this prediction; they were difficult to reconcile with the predictions of previous theories based on an approximated expression for the nonlinearity. The present work also corrects the results of previous one-dimensional theories that used an accurate expression for the nonlinearity and predicted 'spectral lines' in the limit of vanishing spontaneous emission.

Spectral-line structures of saturated parametric instabilities.

The nonlinear saturation spectrum of parametric instabilities is shown to be restricted to discrete values of the propagation vector if spontaneous emission is neglected and a one-dimensional analysis is used. The purely growing instability is not excited for equal ion and electron temperatures if the power is less than 3.5 times the threshold power. The inadequacy of the present one-dimensional treatment is pointed out, and it is shown that waves with propagation vectors that are not parallel to the pump field must be present even if spontaneous emission is neglected.

Excitation of parametric instabilities by radio waves in the ionosphere.

The excitation of parametric instabilities by radio waves in a magnetoplasma is discussed. A uniform medium is assumed and linear approximations are used. Excitation by a pump wave of ordinary polarization is hardly affected by the magnetic field. Low or zero frequency ion waves and high frequency Langmuir waves are excited simultaneously. For an extraordinary pump wave, the excited high frequency electrostatic waves are in the Bernstein mode. The threshold is slightly higher and excitation can occur only within certain 'allowed' frequency bands. A new type of parametric instability in which the excited waves are electromagnetic in nature and which is more strongly affected by the inhomogeneous nature of the medium is discussed qualitatively.

Purely growing parametric instability in an inhomogeneous plasma.

Use of a simple method based on energy balance to rederive the well-known threshold condition for the purely growing parametric instability in a homogeneous medium and to estimate the effects of inhomogeneity in a semiquantitative manner. A method different from that of Perkins and Flick (1971) is then used to calculate the threshold in a more quantitative manner for the instance where the effects of inhomogeneity dominate over those of collisions. The result agrees with that of Perkins and Flick for k sub parallel l much greater than 1 in their terminology. For k sub parallel much less than 1, neither theory is directly applicable and the threshold is obtained by numerical methods. The present method of calculation has the advantages that its range of validity is easily checked, that it provides good physical insight, and that it is easily applicable to electromagnetic instabilities.

Variability of plasma-line enhancement in ionospheric modification experiments.

A simple explanation for the variations of plasma-line intensity is suggested. The explanation is based on the fact that the plasma waves responsible for scattering the radar waves occur over a very limited range of heights. The explanation further makes use of the fact that the position of these height ranges of generation depends primarily on the gradient of the number density and to a lesser extent on the temperature and the orientation of the diagnostic radar beam.
