High-toughness graphite/epoxy composite material experiment

This experiment was designed to measure the effect of near-earth space exposure on three mechanical properties of specially toughened 5208/T300 graphite/epoxy composite materials. The properties measured are elastic modulus, strength, and fracture toughness. Six toughness specimens and nine tensile specimens were mounted on an external frame during the 5.8-year orbit of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). Three identical sets of specimens were manufactured at the outset: the flight set, a zero-time non-flight set, and a total-time non-flight set.

High-toughness graphite/epoxy composite material experiment

This LDEF experiment was designed to measure the effects of near-earth exposure on graphite/epoxy composites over a range of properties. All of the specimens were 8 plies thick, with one of two different cross-ply angles and with one of four different values of bonding fraction between plies. The mechanical properties of interest are toughness, strength, and elastic modulus. Six toughness specimens and nine strength/modulus specimens were manufactured and flown.

To date, two toughness specimens and three strength and modulus specimens have been tested from each of the three groups.

The properties measured are elastic modulus, strength, and fracture toughness. Specimens were mounted on an external frame during the time of the LDEF mission. Specimen variables include angle of adjacent plies and fraction of interlaminar contact, which is controlled by the fraction of finely spaced holes in Mylar film placed between the prepreg monolayers of the composite.
