NGC 7714 - The prototype star-burst galactic nucleus

New X-ray, ultraviolet (IUE), optical, and radio (VLA) observations are presented for the bright nucleus galaxy NGC 7714. All data are explainable as resulting from intense star-formation activity in this nucleus - a star burst. The X-ray and radio luminosities are explained by supernova remnants arising from the massive stars, and approximately 10,000 supernova remnants are required in a volume of 280 pc radius. It is thought that NGC 7714 is typical of a significant class of emission-line galaxies. It is pointed out that individual supernovae should be observable in this, or similar nuclei, because they are expected to occur at rates approaching one per year.

ESO 103-G35 - A new Seyfert galaxy and possible X-ray source

By means of an objective prism plate, two emission-line galaxies have been identified within the 0.7-sq deg HEAO-A2 error box for the X-ray source H1834-653. Optical spectrophotometric observations are reported for both objects as well as the galaxy NGC 6684, which also lies near the position of H1834-653. These data show that one of the emission-line galaxies, ESO 103-G35, is a Seyfert galaxy with a high-excitation forbidden-line spectrum and weak broad emission wings at H-alpha. Further measurements of this galaxy reveal an infrared excess at wavelengths longer than 2.2 microns. The H-alpha luminosity of ESO 103-G35 is consistent with the X-ray luminosity estimated from the HEAO-A2 data, thus strengthening the likelihood of association of this galaxy with the X-ray emission.

A theoretical and observational analysis of He I triplet lines in class 1 Seyfert galaxy spectra

The equations of statistical equilibrium are solved for 11 levels of the helium atom that are most relevant to the production and radiative transfer of He I triplet lines. Solutions are obtained for several densities and temperatures over a run of optical depth in the 10,830-A line, and the results for emission-line strengths are plotted. Spectrophotometric scans and pertinent line strengths are presented for the class 1 Seyfert galaxies 3C 120, NGC 7469, and Mrk 618, as well as for Mrk 335, which exhibits a 'more normal' He I 5876/H-beta ratio. A comparison of the theoretically determined line intensities with the observational results verifies that the He I triplet line intensities are significantly enhanced by electron collisional excitation from 2(3)P and 2(3)S. It is suggested that the gas which gives rise to the broad He I lines in 3C 120, Mrk 618, and NGC 7469 is characterized by a number density of about 5 billion per cu cm, a temperature of approximately 15,000 K, and an optical depth of 100 to 120 in the 10,830-A line.
