Proton Compton Scattering from Linearly Polarized Gamma Rays

In this work, differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the proton have been measured at scattering angles of 55°, 90°, and 125° in the laboratory frame using quasimonoenergetic linearly (circularly) polarized photon beams with a weighted mean energy value of 83.4 MeV (81.3 MeV). These measurements were performed at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source facility at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. The results are compared to previous measurements and are interpreted in the chiral effective field theory framework to extract the electromagnetic dipole polarizabilities of the proton, which gives $α^p_{E1} = 13.8 ± 1.2_{\text{stat}} ± 0.1_{\text{BSR}} ± 0. 3_{\text{theo}} , β^p_{M1} = 0.2 ∓ 1. 2_{\text{stat}} ± 0. 1_{\text{BSR}} ∓ 0. 3_{\text{theo}}$ in units of $10^{–4}$ fm$^3$ .

Beam-spin asymmetry Σ for Σ – hyperon photoproduction off the neutron

We report a new measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}$ for the $\vec{\gamma} n \rightarrow K^+\Sigma^-$ reaction using quasi-free neutrons in a liquid-deuterium target. The new dataset includes data at previously unmeasured photon energy and angular ranges, thereby providing new constraints on partial wave analyses used to extract properties of the excited nucleon states. The experimental data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), housed in Hall B of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The CLAS detector measured reaction products from a liquid-deuterium target produced by an energy-tagged, linearly polarised photon beam with energies in the range 1.1 to 2.3 GeV. Predictions from an isobar model indicate strong sensitivity to $N(1720)3/2^+$, $\Delta(1900)1/2^-$, and $N(1895)1/2^-$, with the latter being a state not considered in previous photoproduction analyses. When our data are incorporated in the fits of partial-wave analyses, one observes significant changes in $\gamma$-$n$ couplings of the resonances which have small branching ratios to the $\pi N$ channel.

Asian dust events of April 1998

On April 15 and 19, 1998, two intense dust storms were generated over the Gobi desert by springtime low-pressure systems descending from the northwest. The windblown dust was detected and its evolution followed by its yellow color on SeaWiFS satellite images, routine surface-based monitoring, and through serendipitous observations.

Satellite color observations of the phytoplankton distribution in the eastern Equatorial Pacific during the 1982-1983 El Nino

Images provided by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) onboard Nimbus-7 show the effect of the 1982-1983 El Nino upon the phytoplankton distribution around the Galapagos Islands, located on the equator. The CZCS scenes document a major redistribution of phytoplankton around the Galapagos Island during a period when sea-surface temperatures (SST) were anomalously high (28 to 29 C). The mixed layer was unusually thick for this region, and the winds and both the surface and subsurface flows changed directions. It is pointed out that the El Nino is characterized as one of the most spectacular examples of a large-amplitude, interannual response of the ocean to atmospheric forcing. The 1982-1983 El Nino is the best documented event of its kind to date, and details of its effects are discussed.
