Development of In-Situ Corrosion Kinetics and Salt Property Measurements (Final Technical Report)

The goal of this research is to fill the knowledge gaps of salt properties and gain a fundamental understanding of corrosion mechanisms, thereby to guiding material selections of salts and containment materials. The proposed research is focused on building unique cross-cutting research capabilities that can perform research and analysis relevant to the following three research topics important for Generation 3 Concentrating Solar Power Systems: (1) Material characterization including investigations of fluid thermophysical properties and stability, (2) Durability testing of containment materials, and (3) Corrosion behavior characterization relative to levels of known contaminants (e.g., water and oxygen) in Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF).

Grain size effect on corrosion behavior of Inconel 625 film against molten MgCl 2 -NaCl-KCl salt

This study evaluated the grain size effect of Inconel 625 film against molten chloride salt. It is found that larger grain size Inconel 625 exhibits better corrosion resistance by reducing Cr depletion. ~ 2 nm surface NiO layer of Inconel 625 is incapable of compensating the negative effects from more initiation corrosion sites. Mo is the least likely leached element and its enrichment occurs in Cr-depleted regions as a result of Mo diffusion. Mg and Cl are two most seen salt elements in all corroded samples, while K and Na only attack Inconel 625 with the smallest grain size.

Probing layered structure of Inconel 625 coatings prepared by magnetron sputtering

Coating/substrate interface and oxide layers present in Inconel 625 film may cause significant impacts on its corrosion behavior. However, layered structure of Inconel 625 coatings remains poorly understood due to its requirement of high spatial resolution. Here we have applied X-ray reflectometry (XRR) to probe the layered structure of magnetron-sputtered Inconel 625 film with atomic spatial resolution. Our results indicate that there exists a 2 nm thick Cr-rich Inconel sublayer underneath the principal film. On top of the principal film, it is found a 2 nm thick oxide layer mainly consisting of NiO. In addition, we detected ~2 Å contamination layer on the sapphire substrate, although argon ion sputter cleaning had been applied to the substrate prior to deposition. By comparing the coatings with different deposition time, we observed that the thickness of principal Inconel 625 layer grows linearly with deposition time, with all other layers remaining constant. Our findings provide insight into the layered structures of Inconel 625 coatings with atomic-scale spatial resolution, and provide directions for future efforts that aim to improve the corrosion resistance of Inconel 625 coatings.

Bayesian optimization of generalized data

Direct application of Bayes' theorem to generalized data yields a posterior probability distribution function (PDF) that is a product of a prior PDF of generalized data and a likelihood function, where generalized data consists of model parameters, measured data, and model defect data. The prior PDF of generalized data is defined by prior expectation values and a prior covariance matrix of generalized data that naturally includes covariance between any two components of generalized data. A set of constraints imposed on the posterior expectation values and covariances of generalized data via a given model is formally solved by the method of Lagrange multipliers. Posterior expectation values of the constraints and their covariance matrix are conventionally set to zero, leading to a likelihood function that is a Dirac delta function of the constraining equation. It is shown that setting constraints to values other than zero is analogous to introducing a model defect. Since posterior expectation values of any function of generalized data are integrals of that function over all generalized data weighted by the posterior PDF, all elements of generalized data may be viewed as nuisance parameters marginalized by this integration. One simple form of posterior PDF is obtained when the prior PDF and the likelihood function are normal PDFs. For linear models without a defect this PDF becomes equivalent to constrained least squares (CLS) method, that is, the χ2 minimization method.
