How Reproducible are Surface Areas Calculated from the BET Equation?

Abstract Porosity and surface area analysis play a prominent role in modern materials science. At the heart of this sits the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) theory, which has been a remarkably successful contribution to the field of materials science. The BET method was developed in the 1930s for open surfaces but is now the most widely used metric for the estimation of surface areas of micro‐ and mesoporous materials. Despite its widespread use, the calculation of BET surface areas causes a spread in reported areas, resulting in reproducibility problems in both academia and industry. To prove this, for this analysis, 18 already‐measured raw adsorption isotherms were provided to sixty‐one labs, who were asked to calculate the corresponding BET areas. This round‐robin exercise resulted in a wide range of values. Here, the reproducibility of BET area determination from identical isotherms is demonstrated to be a largely ignored issue, raising critical concerns over the reliability of reported BET areas. To solve this major issue, a new computational approach to accurately and systematically determine the BET area of nanoporous materials is developed. The software, called “BET surface identification” (BETSI), expands on the well‐known Rouquerol criteria and makes an unambiguous BET area assignment possible.

Simultaneous Control of Pore‐Space Partition and Charge Distribution in Multi‐Modular Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract We report here a strategy for making anionic pacs type porous materials by combining pore space partition with charge reallocation. The method uses the first negatively charged pore partition ligand (2,5,8‐tri‐(4‐pyridyl)‐1,3,4,6,7,9‐hexaazaphenalene, H‐tph) that simultaneously enables pore partition and charge reallocation. Over two dozen anionic pacs materials have been made to demonstrate their excellent chemical stability and a high degree of tunability. Notably, Ni 3 ‐bdt‐tph (bdt=1,4‐benzeneditetrazolate) exhibits month‐long water stability, while CoV‐bdt‐tph sets a new benchmark for C 2 H 2 storage capacity under ambient conditions for ionic MOFs. In addition to tunable in‐framework modules, we show feasibility to tune the type and concentration of extra‐framework counter cations and their influence on both stability and capability to separate industrial C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 and C 6 H 6 /C 6 H 12 mixtures.

The method uses the first negatively charged pore partition ligand (2,5,8-tri-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4,6,7,9-hexaazaphenalene, H-tph) that simultaneously enables pore partition and charge reallocation. Over two dozen anionic pacs materials have been made to demonstrate their excellent chemical stability and a high degree of tunability. Notably, Ni 3 -bdt-tph (bdt=1,4-benzeneditetrazolate) exhibits month-long water stability, while CoV-bdt-tph sets a new benchmark for C 2 H 2 storage capacity under ambient conditions for ionic MOFs. Pore-Space Partition and Optimization for Propane-Selective High-Performance Propane/Propylene Separation

The development of effective propane (C 3 H 8 )-selective adsorbents for the purification of propylene (C 3 H 6 ) from C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 mixture is a promising alternative to replace the energy-intensive cryogenic distillation. However, few materials possess the dual desirable features of propane selectivity and high uptake capacity. Here, we report a family of pore-space-partitioned crystalline porous materials (CPM) with remarkable C 3 H 8 uptake capacity (up to 10.9 mmol/g) and the highly desirable, yet uncommon C 3 H 8 selectivity (up to 1.54 at 0.1 bar and 1.44 at 1bar). The selectivity-capacity synergy endows them with record-performing C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 separation potential (i.e., C 3 H 6 recovered from the mixture). Moreover, these CPMs exhibit outstanding properties including high stability, low regeneration energy, and multi-modular chemical and geometrical tunability within the same isoreticular framework. Furthermore, the high C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 separation performance was further confirmed by the breakthrough experiments.

Transition metal-based bimetallic MOFs and MOF-derived catalysts for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical electrochemical reaction in water splitting and rechargeable metal–air batteries. It plays a pivotal role in achieving high-efficiency clean-energy production and energy storage in these devices. Transition metal-based bimetallic MOFs (TMB MOFs) with two different metal ions possess specific synergistic effects, which could exhibit OER performance and stability superior to those of the corresponding monometallic MOFs for water oxidation. Benefiting from the diversity of chemical composition and structural type, TMB MOFs can also serve as precursors and templates to obtain alloy-particle-decorated carbon materials with high surface area, or metal compounds such as bimetallic sulfides, phosphides, and hydroxides with atomic-level mixing of heterometallic elements. These materials with high-density active sites exhibit much improved catalytic activity in the water oxidation reaction. Furthermore, this article aims to review the recent progress with TMB MOFs and their derivatives in relation to applications as electrocatalysts in OER, including analysis of the mechanism of the OER process with the assistance of DFT calculations and in situ or operando techniques.

ZIF-8 derived carbon materials with multifunctional selective adsorption abilities

We report a family of carbon materials (denoted SFZ8C) prepared from templated carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) in NaCl-ZnCl 2 eutectic salt. The hard-templating effect of the salt is utilized to sustain the framework and maximize the porosity during carbonization. In addition to rich surface nitrogen and oxygen species, SFZ8Cs have large specific surface area. These combined features give rise to excellent adsorption properties for light hydrocarbon gases. SFZ8Cs have both C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selective and C 3 /C 2 selective adsorption, as well as the ability to selectively remove impurities from methane. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent C 3 /C 2 selective adsorption performance by SFZ8C-900. Its propane/ethane selectivity (7.68) is on par with the best value (7.72) reported so far, yet SFZ8C-900 excels in propane uptake capacity. Here, the multifunctional properties together with the ease for the mass production make SFZ8Cs promising for a number of important applications.
