Analysis of trace halocarbon contaminants in ultra high purity helium

This study describes the analysis of ultra high purity helium. Purification studies were conducted and containment removal was effected by the utilization of solid adsorbent purge-trap systems at cryogenic temperatures. Volatile organic compounds in ultra high purity helium were adsorbed on a solid adsorbent-cryogenic trap, and thermally desorbed trace halocarbon and other contaminants were analyzed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

An e.s.c.a. study of atomic oxygen interactions with phosphazene-coated polyimide films

Metallic as well as most nonmetallic materials experience oxidation and mass loss via surface erosion in low earth orbit as shown in previous Space Shuttle flights. This study is an evaluation of select polyphosphazene polymers and their resistance to atomic oxygen attack. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis examinations of the surfaces of polyphosphazene coatings were monitored for microstructural changes induced during exposures to atomic oxygen. Sample exposures in oxygen plasmas and O(3P) beam were compared as to their effect on surface compositional changes in the polyphosphazene coating. High resolution line scans revealed rearrangements in the polymer backbone and scissioning reactions involving fluorocarbon units of long chain fluoroalkoxy pendant groups. Atom percents and peak areas of all species provided a detailed profile of the microstructural changes induced in phosphazene polymers as a result of exposures to atomic oxygen.

Atomic-oxygen induced structural changes in polyphosphazene films and coatings

Various polymers were exposed to atomic oxygen O(3P) and comparisons made of their stability. The rates of reaction and mass removal for polyphosphazenes exposed to atomic oxygen were found to be significantly lower than for other polymers evaluated in this study. Surface analysis of polyphosphazene films indicated that O(3P) induces rearrangements in the phosphorus-nitrogen backbone of the polymer, resulting in cross-linking and cleavage of some pendant groups that are then replaced by oxygen.
