An Update on the Mechanical and EM Performance of the Composite Dish Verification Antenna (DVA-1) for the SKA

This paper will give an overview of the unique mechanical and optical design of the DVA-1 telescope. The rim supported carbon fibre reflector surfaces are designed to be both low cost and have high performance under wind, gravity, and thermal loads. The shaped offset Gregorian optics offer low and stable side lobes along with a large area at the secondary focus for multiple feeds with no aperture blockage. Telescope performance under ideal conditions as well as performance under gravity, wind, and thermal loads will be compared directly using calculated radiation patterns for each of these operating conditions.

Fatigue reliability method with in-service inspections

The first reliability method (FORM) has traditionally been applied in a fatigue reliability setting to one inspection interval at a time, so that the random distribution of crack lengths must be recharacterized following each inspection. The FORM presented here allow each analysis to span several inspection periods without explicit characterization of the crack length distribution upon each inspection. The method thereby preserves the attractive feature of FORM in that relatively few realizations in the random variable space need to be considered. Examples are given which show that the present methodology gives estimates which are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations and is efficient even for complex components.

Materials Experiment Carrier Thermal Control System study

The Materials Experimental Carrier (MEC) vehicle currently under study at NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center presents unique power and heat rejection problems to the 25 kW Power System (PS). In order to determine how these requirements can best be met on both the Power System and MEC vehicle, Thermal Control System Trade Studies were conducted. The results of these trade studies indicated total weight to orbit would be minimized for multiple MEC launches by centralized radiators on the Power System. A split loop arrangement of Power System Thermal Control Subsystem, with separate loops for payload and PS heat rejection, appeared favorable from these trades. FC72 fluid was recommended for the high temperature MEC heat transport loop.
