Purity and Cleanness of Aeorgel as a Cosmic Dust Capture Medium

The capability for capturing micrometeoroids intact through laboratory simulations [Tsou 1988] and in space [Tsou 1993] in passive underdense silica aerogel offers a valuable tool for cosmic dust research. The integrity of the sample handling medium can substantially modify the integrity of the sample. Intact capture is a violent hypervelocity event: the integrity of the capturing medium can cause even greater modification of the sample.

A search for C60 in carbonaceous chondrites

Analysis of interior samples of the Murchison meteorite by two routes yielded an upper limit of 2 ppb for its C60 content, as compared to parts per million levels for individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs ). Provided the samples contain an interstellar component, which is probable since Murchison hydrocarbons contain excess deuterium, this result argues against the ubiquitous presence of C60 in the interstellar medium. A possible explanation for the absence of C60 was found in experiments showing how PAHs replace fullerenes as stable end products when hydrogen is present during carbon condensation. As a secondary result we found high molecular weight PAHs in the Murchison and Allende meteorites. Coronene and its methyl derivatives are especially interesting since features in the coronene spectrum have been shown to match some of the unidentified interstellar infrared emission bands.

TERSSE. Definition of the total earth resources system for the shuttle era. Volume 10: (TOSS) TERSSE operational system study

Economic benefits studies regarding the application of remote sensing to resource management and the Total Earth Resources for the Shuttle Era (TERSSE) study to outline the structure and development of future systems are used, along with experience from LANDSAT and LACIE, to define the system performance and economics of an operational Earth Resources system. The system is to be based on current (LANDSAT follow-on) technology and its application to high priority resource management missions, such as global crop inventory. The TERSSE Operational System Study (TOSS) investigated system-level design alternatives using economic performance as the evaluation criterion. As such, the TOSS effort represented a significant step forward in the systems engineering and economic analysis of Earth Resources programs. By parametrically relating engineering design parameters, such as sensor performance details, to the economic benefit mechanisms a new level of confidence in the conclusions concerning the implementation of such systems can be reached.

Magnetic control assembly qualification model

Fabrication and testing of the magnetic control assembly (MCA) are summarized. The MCA was designed as an add-on unit for certain existing components of the Nimbus and ERTS attitude control system. The MCA system consists of three orthogonal electromagnets; a magnetometer probe capable of sensing external fields in the X, Y, and Z axes; and the control electronics. An operational description of the system is given along with all major drawings and photographs. Manufacturing and inspection procedures are outlined and a chronological list of events is included with the fabrication summary.
