Structural and spectral studies of hydrated hexaamminecobalt(III)–hexafluororhenate(IV)

The crystal structure of the [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 2 [ReF 6 ] 3 ·3H 2 O (I) salt is reported. The salt crystallizes in the trigonal space group P31m with the following unit cell dimensions: a = 15.8714(4) Å, b = 15.8714(4) Å, and c = 9.8657(4) Å. Here, the structure of (I) consists of [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ cations, [ReF 6 ] 2– anions, and co-crystallized water molecules which are linked by hydrogen bonding. In (I), independent [ReF 6 ] 2– anions and [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ cations octahedron are slightly distorted. Characteristic vibration bands of the [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ cation, [ReF 6 ] 2– anion as well as the co-crystallized H 2 O molecules are observed in the infrared spectra of (I). UV-Visible analyses in water showed that the absorption of the [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ cation predominate the spectra of (I).

β -Technetium: An allotrope with a nonstandard volume-pressure relationship

In this work, we report the synthesis and structure of the second allotrope of technetium, β-Tc. Transformative pathways are accessed at extreme conditions using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell and confirmed with in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. βTc is fully recoverable to ambient conditions, although counter to our DFT calculations predicting a face-centered-cubic lattice, we observe a tetragonal structure (I4/mmm) that exhibits further tetragonal distortion with pressure. β-Tc has an expanded volume relative to the hcp ground state phase, that when doped with nitrogen has an unexpected volume lowering. Such anomalous behavior is possibly indicative of a rare electronic phase transition in a 4d element.

Coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization in ammonium hexafluoridorhenate

The (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] (1) salt was studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, and magnetic measurements. 1 crystallizes in the trigonal space group P$\overline{3}$m1 (Re–F = 1.958(5) Å). In the Raman spectrum of 1, splitting of the observed peaks was observed and correlated to the valence frequencies of vibration of the [ReF 6 ] 2– anion. The study of the magnetic properties of 1, through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements, reveals the coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization at low temperature, which is unusual in the molecular systems based on the paramagnetic 5d metal ions reported so far.

Solvothermal synthesis and solid-state characterization of metal-metal bonded tetracarboxylatoditechnetium(II,III) polymers

Investigations of solvothermal reactions with pertechnetate, [TcO 4 ] - , have produced four new low-valent Tc extended metal atom chain (EMAC) complexes with multiple metal-metal bonds. The thermal reaction of potassium pertechnetate with glacial acetic acid, under in-situ hydrogen production from the decomposition of sodium borohydride, yields purple elongated crystals determined to be tetraacetato ditechnetium (II,III) acetate (1), [Tc 2 (O 2 CCH 3 ) 4 (μ-O 2 CCH 3 ] n . Compound 1 was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and its magnetic properties recorded between 10 and 300 K. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 indicates the Tc 2 +5 tetraacetato unit is linked by the carboxylate oxygens of the bridging acetate, similar to known chloride and bromide linkage polymers of composition [Tc 2 (μ-O 2 CCH 3 ) 4 Cl] n , and [Tc 2 (μ-O 2 CCH 3 ) 4 Br] n . Here, using the same synthetic method three similar compounds have been synthesized from propionic, benzoic and pivalic acid.
