Regional Subsurface Stress Assessment for CO 2 Storage in Candidate Basal Reservoirs within the Plains CO 2 Reduction Partnership Region of North America

Conference presentation at Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference 2024, Houston, Texas, March 11–13, 2024. A screening-level regional evaluation of basement and mechanical overburden stress across the geologically diverse Plains CO 2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership Initiative region was conducted. The main objective of the project was to assess potential basement fault reactivation and better understand technical uncertainties pertaining to CO 2 storage in candidate basal reservoirs.

Screening Assessment of Prospective CO 2 Storage Resource Potential in Saline Carbonate Systems, Central North Dakota Region

Conference presentation at 2023 Rocky Mountain Section-American Association of Petroleum Geologists (RMS-AAPG) Annual Meeting, Bismarck, ND, June 4–6, 2023. As part of the U.S. Department of Energy-funded North Dakota CarbonSAFE Phase III effort, a screening-level assessment was conducted over central North Dakota, including McLean, Mercer, and Morton Counties, to determine if viable CO 2 storage resource potential exists within carbonate saline reservoirs. Published literature and data from 173 wells were used in the study. The study focused on identifying carbonate saline reservoirs and suitable confining zones for CO 2 storage, with emphasis on three key questions: 1) are the carbonate saline reservoirs viable for CO 2 storage? 2) what is their range of storage resource potential? and 3) what are the main elements driving uncertainty and risk of potential capacity and containment?

Geomechanical Study for Stacked Carbon Dioxide Storage in North Dakota

Conference presentation at American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference, Houston, Texas, April 25–27, 2023. When multiple carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) storage targets are present in the subsurface at the same geographic location, a CO 2 storage project may pursue a stacked storage approach. This study focused on assessing geomechanical effects on dedicated storage in stacked saline aquifers during a 20-year CO 2 injection project life.

Stacked Carbon Dioxide Storage: Technical and Geomechanical Considerations

Conference paper presented at 16th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-16), Lyon, France, October 23–27, 2022. When two or more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) storage targets are present in the subsurface at the same geographic location, a CO 2 storage project may pursue a stacked storage approach. This investigation was predominantly focused on dedicated storage in stacked saline formations to assess technical and geomechanical considerations. Along with a best practice stacked storage review, a geomechanical assessment was performed to test a 20-year CO 2 injection scenario.
