Approximate penetration factors for nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest

The ranges of validity of approximations of P(l), the penetration factor which appears in the parameterization of nuclear-reaction cross sections at low energies and is employed in the extrapolation of laboratory data to even lower energies of astrophysical interest, are investigated analytically. Consideration is given to the WKB approximation, P(l) at the energy of the total barrier, approximations derived from the asymptotic expansion of G(l) for large eta, approximations for small values of the parameter x, applications of P(l) to nuclear reactions, and the dependence of P(l) on channel radius. Numerical results are presented in tables and graphs, and parameter ranges where the danger of serious errors is high are identified.

Helium /3/ rich solar flares

Several aspects of a solar flare model that emphasizes evidence for the formation of current filaments as mechanisms of field dissipation are discussed. The origin of flare magnetic fields is considered, along with the thermal distribution, electron density, and high-energy X ray emission of flares. It is suggested that the extreme He-3 enrichment in some solar flares is due to spallation and the subsequent confinement of spallation products in a high-temperature high-density plasma associated with the magnetic instability that produces the flare. A current filament is assumed to produce the spallation and maintain the temperature that yields the high-energy X-ray spectrum and depletes the isotopes D, Li, Be, and B, as observed.

Mean lifetimes and equilibrium abundances in the fast CN cycle.

It is shown that the production of small nitrogen to carbon ratios is possible, in contrast to the equilibrium production in the ordinary CN cycle. Associated with such a production are high ratios of C-13/C-12 and of N-15/N-14. The final ratios depend on the conditions under which cessation of hydrogen burning occurs under astrophysical circumstances. A table showing proton capture mean lifetimes of CN nuclei is provided together with tables of the equilibrium abundances in a fast CN cycle. The ratios of final abundances of nitrogen to carbon as functions of temperature are also presented.
