Measurement of R = σ L / σ T and the separated longitudinal and transverse structure functions in the nucleon-resonance region

Here we report on a detailed study of longitudinal strength in the nucleon resonance region, presenting new results from inclusive electron-proton cross sections measured at Jefferson Lab Hall C in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 < Q 2 < 5.5 GeV 2 . The data have been used to accurately perform over 170 Rosenbluth-type longitudinal/transverse separations. The precision R = $\sigma_{L} /\sigma _{T}$ data are presented here, along with the first separate values of the inelastic structure functions F 1 and F L in this regime. The resonance longitudinal component is found to be significant. With the new data, quark-hadron duality is observed above Q 2 = 1 GeV 2 in the separated structure functions independently.

Effects and mitigation of pulsed power radiation on optical fiber velocimetry

We report optical fiber diagnostics are extensively used in pulsed power experiments, such as the Sandia Z machine. However, radiation produced in a pulsed power environment can significantly affect these measurements. Catastrophic fiber darkening may be mitigated with shielding, but no flexible material can stop all radiation produced by the machine and/or target. Radiation-induced refractive index modulations are particularly challenging for optical interferometry. Several approaches for radiation-tolerant photonic Doppler velocimetry are discussed here.

Picosecond timing of microwave Cherenkov impulses from high-energy particle showers using dielectric-loaded waveguides

Here, we report on the first measurements of coherent microwave impulses from high-energy particle-induced electromagnetic showers generated via the Askaryan effect in a dielectric-loaded waveguide. Bunches of 12.16 GeV electrons with total bunch energy of ∼10 3 – 10 4 GeV were preshowered in tungsten, and then measured with WR-51 rectangular (12.6 mm by 6.3 mm) waveguide elements loaded with solid alumina (Al 2⁢ O 3 ) bars. In the 5–8 GHz 𝑇⁢𝐸 10 single-mode band determined by the presence of the dielectric in the waveguide, we observed band-limited microwave impulses with amplitude proportional to bunch energy. Signals in different waveguide elements measuring the same shower were used to estimate relative time differences with 2.3 ps precision. These measurements establish a basis for using arrays of alumina-loaded waveguide elements, with exceptional radiation hardness, as very high precision timing planes for high-energy physics detectors.
