In situ oxidation of reduced graphene oxide membranes by peracetic acid for dye desalination

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with tunable interlayer spacings are of interest for dye removal from salty textile wastewater, and the membranes are often reduced to improve their stability, which inevitably lowers water permeance. Herein, we demonstrate that reduced GO (rGO) membranes can be facilely modified using peracetic acid (PAA) in situ to dramatically enhance water permeance while retaining dye rejection. Specifically, PAA-modified membranes (PrGO) are synthesized by vacuum-filtering hydrazine-reduced rGO nanosheets onto Nylon substrate and then exposing them to PAA solutions. The effects of the rGO layer thickness, PAA content, and PAA exposure time on the membrane chemistry, nanostructures, and salt/dye separation properties are thoroughly examined. For example, the PAA oxidation of a 100 nm-thick rGO membrane for 10 min increases water permeance by 180 %, from 35 to 93 Liter m −2 h −1 bar −1 , and decreases Na 2 SO 4 rejection from 10 % to 3.3 % while retaining the rejection of Congo red at ≈99.7 %. The PrGO membranes exhibit stable water permeance and >99 % dye rejection in multi-cycle tests in a crossflow system, surpassing state-of-the-art GO membranes and showcasing their potential for practical applications.

Cellulose acetate membranes exhibit exceptional monovalent to divalent cation selectivities

Salt transport properties of cellulose acetate membranes are reported for a series of chloride salts with mono- valent and divalent cations (LiCl, NaCl, MgCl 2 , CaCl 2 ). Measurements include salt permeability and sorption, with diffusivity values calculated from the permeability and sorption results. We report an exceptionally high LiCl/MgCl 2 selectivity of 750:1. Salts with similar valence (LiCl and NaCl; MgCl 2 and CaCl 2 ) have similar transport properties. The high monovalent/divalent selectivity arises from differences in both sorption and diffusion, with a LiCl/MgCl 2 solubility selectivity of about 11 and a diffusivity selectivity of about 70. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations show that ions tend to reside in isolated clusters of water. Increasing ion charge strengthens ion–water interactions relative to ion–polymer interactions, explaining the reduced sorption of divalent ions. Diffusion of ions through the membrane occurs via hop-like motion between water clusters. Lithium diffuses faster than magnesium due to weaker ion–water coordination for lithium, which allows for greater mobility within water clusters and more frequent hopping. Altogether, our atomistic simulations suggest that the high LiCl/MgCl 2 selectivity is linked to cellulose acetate’s high water/salt selectivity and is a consequence of low water content and relatively uniform water distribution.

Supersoft Norbornene–Based Thermoplastic Elastomers with High Strength and Upper Service Temperature

With over 6 million tons produced annually, thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) have become ubiquitous in modern society, due to their unique combination of elasticity, toughness, and reprocessability. Nevertheless, industrial TPEs display a tradeoff between softness and strength, along with low upper service temperatures, typically ≤100 °C. This limits their utility, such as in bio-interfacial applications where supersoft deformation is required in tandem with strength, in addition to applications that require thermal stability (e.g., encapsulation of electronics, seals/joints for aeronautics, protective clothing for firefighting, and biomedical devices that can be subjected to steam sterilization). Thus, combining softness, strength, and high thermal resistance into a single versatile TPE has remained an unmet opportunity. Through de novo design and synthesis of novel norbornene-based ABA triblock copolymers, this gap is filled. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization is employed to prepare TPEs with an unprecedented combination of properties, including skin-like moduli (<100 kPa), strength competitive with commercial TPEs (>5 MPa), and upper service temperatures akin to high-performance plastics (≈260 °C). Here, the materials are elastic, tough, reprocessable, and shelf stable (≥2 months) without incorporation of plasticizer. Structure–property relationships identified herein inform development of next-generation TPEs that are both biologically soft yet thermomechanically durable.

Amine functionalized supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) for CO 2 /N 2 separation

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), containing aprotic N-heterocyclic anion ionic liquids (AHA ILs) in an inorganic inert support, exhibit CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity values as high as 640 at 35.0 °C and 0.03 bar CO 2 , which represents conditions similar to post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) from a natural gas power plant. A Fickian model fit to the experimental data estimates CO 2 permeability at direct air capture (DAC) conditions of 10,400 barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity of 4000 for the best performing IL, triethyl(octyl)phosphonium 4-bromopyrazolide ([P 2228 ][4-BrPyra]). The most important criterion for high selectivity is a large equilibrium constant for binding between the IL and CO 2 , which results in high CO 2 solubility. ILs with smaller molar volumes and with no fluoroalkyl chains enhance N 2 rejection. As a result, low viscosity and high IL molar density also enhance CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity and CO 2 permeance.

Ion and Water Dynamics in the Transition from Dry to Wet Conditions in Salt-Doped PEG

The influence of the water content on ion and water transport mechanisms in polymer membranes under low to moderate hydration conditions remains poorly understood. In this study, we combine ion and water diffusivity (PFG-NMR) measurements with atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to better understand transport processes in hydrated salt-doped poly(ethylene glycol). Above the water percolation threshold, the experimental and simulated diffusivities are in good agreement with the free volume transport models. At low hydration levels, unlike dry systems, ion diffusion cannot be described by polymer segmental dynamics alone. We rationalize such observations by the interplay between ion–water and ion–polymer solvation of cations and between ion–water and cation–anion interactions for anions. Further, we demonstrate that a two-state model combining ion–water solvation and free volume transport can describe water dynamics across the entire hydration range of interest. Here, our findings provide a more encompassing analysis of ion and water transport in hydrated polyelectrolytes, specifically in the low hydration regime.
