Spontaneous synchrotron emission from a plasma with an energetic runaway electron tail

The emissivity of spontaneous synchrotron radiation is computed for a plasma consisting of a background thermal plasma in addition to an energetic runaway electron component. The analysis is performed for both the ordinary and extraordinary modes, for frequencies in the vicinity of the electron plasma frequency and the higher harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency, and for the case when the electron plasma frequency is approximately the same as or smaller than the cyclotron frequency. The relativistic gyroresonance with the runaway electrons is found to result in a level of spontaneous emission which, for frequencies in the neighborhood of the electron plasma frequency, is significantly enhanced over the thermal radiation.

Excitation of low frequency waves by streaming ions via anomalous cyclotron resonance

The effect of a small population of streaming ions on low-frequency waves with frequencies below the ion cyclotron frequency is analyzed for three modes of interest: Alfven waves, magnetosonic waves, and ion-cyclotron waves. The instability mechanism is the anomalous cyclotron resonance of the waves with the streaming ions. Conditions for excitation of the three types of waves are derived and expressions for the growth rates are obtained. Excitation of Alfven waves is possible even if the ratio of the densities of the streaming ions to the thermal ions is very small. For magnetosonic waves, excitation can easily occur if waves are propagating parallel or nearly parallel to the ambient magnetic field. As for ion-cyclotron waves, it is found that for the ion-whistler branch the excitation is suppressed over a broader range of wave frequencies than for the fast magnetosonic branch.

Spontaneous emission near the electron plasma frequency in a plasma with a runaway electron tail

Spontaneous emission of radiation with frequencies near the electron plasma frequency is studied for a plasma which consists of both thermal and runaway electrons. It is found that a substantial enhancement of the spontaneous radiation intensity can occur in this frequency regime via a Cherenkov resonance with the runaway electrons. Numerical analysis indicates that, for reasonable estimates of densities and energies, the plasma-frequency radiation can attain levels greater than the peak thermal emission at the second gyroharmonic.

Synchrotron emissivity near the electron cyclotron and upper hybrid frequencies

The spontaneous synchrotron emissivity from a high density, weakly relativistic plasma in thermal equilibrium is discussed. Thermal effects on the dielectric polarization of the plasma are included in the analysis, and the result is compared with computations of the emissivity based upon the cold plasma approximation. A numerical analysis is performed for frequencies in the vicinity of both the electron cyclotron frequency and the upper hybrid resonance. Significant modifications to the synchrotron emissivity in the cold plasma approximation are found in both of these frequency regimes.

Plasma effects on the spontaneous emission of synchrotron radiation from weakly relativistic electrons

A method for computing the spectral emissivity of spontaneous synchrotron radiation is discussed. The Klimontovich (1967) formalism in plasma kinetic theory is adopted in which an ensemble average of the microscopically emitted power is considered. The present method clarifies the meaning of the random phase approximation which is imposed in several existing theories of synchrotron radiation. Both the effects of dielectric polarization and two-particle correlations are included in the present discussion. The theory is applied to the case of a plasma in thermal equilibrium, for which it is shown that the effect of pair correlations on the emissivity vanishes. On the other hand, the effect of dielectric polarization is studied numerically for a wide range of parameters.

Induced emission of Jupiter's decametric radiation by Io-accelerated electrons

A source mechanism for the Io-modulated component of the Jovian decametric radiation is proposed on the basis of the model where electrons in the Io flux tube (IFT) can be accelerated by Io's sheath. It is suggested that a significant fraction of the Io-sheath-accelerated electrons can have pitch angles greater than the atmospheric loss cone and therefore become trapped in the IFT. These electrons have flat helical orbits near their mirror points and can give rise to induced emission of extraordinary-mode radiation with frequencies close to the local electron gyrofrequency. The excitation mechanism is primarily due to the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the electrons via a relativistic gyroresonance which arises because of the momentum dependence of the gyrofrequency. Emphasis is put on the case of nearly perpendicular propagation because it is consistent with the observed source regions and beaming pattern of the decametric emissions. The energy requirement is satisfied within the context of the theory. It is also shown that emission occurs in regions close to the planet above the ionosphere.

Induced gyroresonant emission of extraordinary mode radiation

Induced amplification of extraordinary-mode electromagnetic waves in a magnetized plasma is investigated. The analysis is performed for a plasma which consists of two components: a relatively dense species of thermal plasma and a diffuse population of suprathermal electrons characterized by a loss cone-type distribution. The excitation mechanism is primarily due to the interaction of the electromagnetic waves with the energetic electrons via the relativistic cyclotron resonance which arises because of the momentum dependence of the gyrofrequency. The present study is particularly concerned with waves propagating perpendicularly and nearly perpendicularly with respect to the external magnetic field, since it is expected that for these cases the cyclotron damping due to thermal electrons is vanishingly small and the growth rates are maximum. The results indicate that excitation occurs primarily for frequencies near the first two gyroharmonics.

Excitation of the ordinary electromagnetic mode in low-beta plasmas

The excitation of the ordinary mode propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field in a plasma is discussed for the case where the ratio of the kinetic energy associated with electron motion parallel to the external magnetic field to the energy density of the magnetic field is low. The analysis is performed for plasma in which in addition to the thermal electrons there is a hot anisotropic electron component. Relativistic effects are taken into account in the stability analysis. Both a ring distribution and a loss cone distribution are used to model the hot electron species. For the ring distribution typical growth rates are larger than that for the case of the loss cone distribution. Excitation of the ordinary mode is found at numerous harmonics of the cyclotron frequency for the ring distribution, however, the loss cone distribution is found to give instability primarily at the fundamental harmonic.
