Two decades after humanity's last exploration of the red planet, a new international program of Mars study will begin late this year when NASA's and Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory launches its Mars Global Surveyor orbiting mission and its Mars Pathfinder lander and micro-rover.Spacecraft from Earth last visited Mars in 1976 when two Viking orbiters and two landers conducted a very successful survey of the entire planet from orbit and detailed studies of the surface at the two landing sites.

Cassini Under Construction to Explore Saturn

The last of the United States' large, many-instrument, interplanetary spacecraft is being built this year at NASA's and Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in La Caada Flintridge. Assembly began late last year on JPL's Cassini Saturn-orbiting spacecraft, which will carry the Huygens probe to study the atmosphere and surface of Saturn's largest moon.

Space Science for the Third Millennium

As NASA approaches the beginning of its fifth decade in 1998, and as the calendar approaches the beginning of its third millennium, America's civilian space agency is changing its historic ideas about conducting space science so that it will still be able to perform the desired scientific studies in an era of constrained NASA budgets.
