Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) 26r Detailed Produced Water Compositions (version 1.0)

A database of geochemical compositions of aqueous species in produced water reported to the PA DEP. Samples were collected between mid-2012 to early-2020. Data from publicly-available PA DEP 26r reports were scraped from pdf files and cumulated into tabular spreadsheet format for >1000 produced water streams from Marcellus wells in Pennsylvania. In addition to providing the original values, the NETL NEWTS team has reformatted the dataset to allow sample streams to be easily copied into OLI Studio and Geochemist WorkBench (GWB) software for modeling the geochemistry and the recovery of critical minerals, such as lithium, from these produced water streams. In addition, a version of the dataset has been included with predictions for some missing values in the original dataset using machine learning techniques within CoDaRT software, a public ML software developed by the Nation Energy Technology Laboratory. We have made the Input into CoDaRT and one example output from CoDaRT available in this dataset.

Treatment and Mineral Recovery from Combustion Residual Leachate and Produced Water

This talk presents the design of operationally flexible diafiltration membrane systems for Li/Co recovery, and applies robust optimization methodologies using these flexible systems to generate optimal designs immune to membrane manufacturing variability and uncertain process inlet conditions. The results highlight the use of robust optimization to find design strategies and insights that may reduce technical risks arising from model uncertainties.

NEWTS Argonne Geothermal Geochemical Database with CoDART

A database of geochemical compositions of aqueous species in potential geothermal resources. The NETL NEWTS team has formatted the original Argonne V2 database for Charge Balance, Input into OLI Studio, and Input into GWB. (Geochemist WorkBench) In addition, some missing species in the original database were predicted using machine learning techniques within CoDart software, a public ML software developed by the Nation Energy Technology Laboratory. We have made the Input into CoDart and one example output from CoDart available in this dataset.

Constituent Data Replacement Tool

The purpose of this tool is to estimate key parameters that may be missing in public wastewater composition datasets. The tool can be applied to develop complete treatment and critical mineral extraction profiles for leachate, produced water and other aqueous waste streams. The tool applies machine learning algorithms to replace missing data in a user’s water data set that are adjusted based on user preferences for options including algorithm type, number of features, and classification variables. The tool can use the user’s data alone or combine user data with the NEWTS USGS Produced Water Database for more robust training. This research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) through National Energy Technology Laboratory’s ongoing research under the Water Management for Power System Field Work Proposal, DE-FECM 1022428 and Critical Minerals Field Work Proposal, DE-FECM 1022420.

NAWI Research Spotlight: Technoeconomic Assessment of Brine Valorization from Brackish Groundwater

This NAWI Research Spotlight Webinar was presented to the NAWI Alliance on June 27, 2024. The presentation describes project progress to date on a technoeconomic assessment of brine valorization from brackish groundwater. Desalination at inland brackish groundwater treatment plants is currently limited by high costs of concentrate management and disposal. With current methods, 5-25% of the feed is disposed of as concentrate, with 98% of disposal using conventional methods (i.e. no byproduct recovery). This project aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility of industrial ecosystems to desalinate brackish groundwater and supply existing and potential markets for clean concentrate or other bulk constituents from the brine.

Abstract for CRADA between NETL and Rivalia Chemical Co

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will assist Rivalia Chemical Co (Participant) with system analyses to aid the Participant with setting priorities and securing funding. The Participant is an early-stage startup pioneering new chemical extraction technology to solve two important problems: critical mineral scarcity and coal ash waste management. The U.S. generates coal fly ash from coal combustion for power generation and has amassed over two billion metric tons of ash, which contains valuable rare earth elements. The ash is often stored in unlined ponds and frequently contaminates the local environment. The Participant’s patent-pending process harvests rare earths from ash, then transforms the residual ash for use in green concrete, providing an economic pathway for utilities to empty and remediate the ash ponds. Founder Laura Stoy created the company in July 2022 after developing the core intellectual property during her Ph.D. at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Stoy is currently participating in the Chain Reactions Innovations (CRI) program at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) where she will be optimizing the core technology and scaling from bench scale to demonstration scale. The technology has been validated at bench scale (TRL3); the goal is to approach TRL5 by the conclusion of the CRI program and prepare to raise capital investment for a pilot facility. NETL and the Participant will develop an updated technoeconomic analysis (TEA) and identify key sustainability performance parameters to inform ’s research and development priorities and de-risk the technology. NETL will also provide the Participant with guidance to prepare a more detailed life cycle assessment (LCA), and a narrative on the Participant’s product markets. These tools will aid the Participant with the next steps of commercialization.

Process-based cost estimation framework for assessing economic viability of environmentally and socially sustainable rare earth element feedstocks

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are critical raw material inputs that are required to enable the energy transition. Constraints on the U.S. supply of conventional REE feedstocks and the desire to diversify U.S. reliance on foreign supply chains have motivated the pursuit of REE recovery from unconventional feedstocks including waste products. Recovery of REEs from unconventional sources is also motivated by environmental and social considerations, including the potential to offset new mining activity and subsidize the remediation of REE-containing wastes from coal, natural gas, and other mineral extraction activities. Sourcing REEs from unconventional feedstocks would reduce supply chain constraints and minimize the environmental impacts of REE extraction, but current processes to exploit these feedstocks have uncertain technical and economic performance and the processes have not been demonstrated at scale. This work aims to reduce uncertainty in evaluating the performance of new REE production pathways. A database of operating and capital expenses for REE recovery and establish consistent process unit costs for common stages in the conventional supply chain are developed. Market prices are used to develop well-defined methods for determining product values for a diverse set of products that can be generated (e.g. oxalates, alloys, end-use products such as magnets) but are not typically considered in technoeconomic analyses. Finally, to provide insight on the effects of economies of scale and feedstock purity on capital and operating costs, process unit level cost functions relating total costs per kilogram of REE produced are reported. These tools can be applied to assess and facilitate scale-up of REE production from diverse sources of REEs.
