Heterogenous activation of dynamic recrystallization and twinning during friction stir processing of a Cu-4Nb alloy

An interplay between high degree of shear deformation and deformation-induced heating occurs during friction stir processing (FSP) of metals. In medium-to-low stacking fault energy Cu alloys, this can lead to a complex spatially heterogenous activation of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and twinning mechanisms. Within the Cu-Nb system, the presence of Nb is further expected to influence the DRX mechanism of the Cu matrix. However, the microstructural changes induced by the co-deformation of Nb during FSP are still not well understood. So, this study uses a combination of multimodal microstructural characterization, solution thermodynamics-based predictions, and computational crystal plasticity simulation to reveal the various microstructural evolution mechanisms that can occur during FSP of a Cu-4at.%Nb binary model alloy. The formation of softer DRX zones, and harder shear localization regions are revealed using electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography, and crystal plasticity modeling.

Effect of loading path on grain misorientation and geometrically necessary dislocation density in polycrystalline aluminum under reciprocating shear

Solid phase processing (SPP) is a promising alloy fabrication technique to produce fine and homogeneous grain structures for high-performance alloys. However, there is very limited modeling capability to understand and predict the grain refinement during SPP. In this work, the crystal plasticity theory was used to study elastic-plastic deformation in polycrystalline aluminums under large shear deformation. Two approaches, kernel averaged misorientation (KAM) and grain reference orientation deviation (GROD), were used to assess the grain misorientations. The geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) density was computed with the plastic strain rate. The deformation simulations were carried out under two loading conditions to investigate the effect of loading paths on the evolutions of grain misorientation and GND density. The results show that the regions with high misorientation and GND density first appear near grain boundaries. These regions then extend toward interior grains. The loading path affects dislocation system activation and dislocation recovery, hence dislocation evolution and misorientation. In conclusion, both two- and three-dimensional simulations showed that the spatial and temporal evolutions of GROD, KAM, and GND density in are closely correlated, which indicates they all can be used as criteria of grain refinement or recrystallization.

Lattice misorientation evolution and grain refinement in Al-Si alloys under high-strain shear deformation

The starting microstructure of an alloy can be tailored to achieve varying degrees of microstructural refinement and enhance mechanical properties through severe plastic shear deformation during solid-phase processing. Crystal plasticity-based grain misorientation modeling, coupled with systematic pin-on-disk tribometry-based subsurface shear deformation experiments on as-cast Al-xSi alloys (x = 0, 1, 4 at %), was conducted. The post-deformation microstructural analysis, through a combined computational and experimental approach, conclusively shows that the initial volume fraction of the hard Si phase enhances the evolution of local lattice misorientation, leading to efficient grain refinement during severe plastic shear deformation. The shear–deformation-induced nanostructure resulted in more than double the nanoindentation hardness in the processed alloy.
