Effects of wave damping and finite perpendicular scale on three-dimensional Alfvén wave parametric decay in low-beta plasmas

Shear Alfvén wave parametric decay instability (PDI) provides a potential path toward significant wave dissipation and plasma heating. However, fundamental questions regarding how PDI is excited in a realistic three-dimensional (3D) open system and how the finite perpendicular wave scale—as found in both laboratory and space plasmas—affects the excitation remain poorly understood. Here, we present the first 3D, open-boundary, hybrid kinetic-fluid simulations of kinetic Alfvén wave PDI in low-beta plasmas. Key findings are that the PDI excitation is strongly limited by the wave damping present, including electron–ion collisional damping (represented by a constant resistivity) and geometrical attenuation associated with the finite-scale Alfvén wave, and ion Landau damping of the child acoustic wave. The perpendicular wave scale alone, however, plays no discernible role: waves of different perpendicular scales exhibit similar instability excitation as long as the magnitude of the parallel ponderomotive force remains unchanged. These findings are corroborated by theoretical analysis and estimates. This new understanding of 3D kinetic Alfvén wave PDI physics is essential for laboratory study of the basic plasma process and may also aid future evaluation of the relevance/role of PDI in low-beta space plasma.

Collaborative Research: Parametric Instabilities of Alfven Waves in Low‐beta Plasmas

Alfven waves are of fundamental importance in magnetized plasmas. This project aims to advance our understanding of the basic physics of the parametric instabilities of Alfven waves using advanced computer simulations. The results will have implications for important processes in the heliosphere involving Alfven waves, such as coronal heating and solar wind heating.

Nonlinear Interactions of Alfven Waves in Multi-ion Plasmas (Final Report)

Alfven waves are of fundamental importance in magnetized plasmas, such as the solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere. When the wave amplitude is large, nonlinear interactions among waves, such as three wave resonance, dominate the dynamics. The nonlinear process can be used as a diagnosis of the plasma composition because the composition affects the dispersion relation of Alfven waves, especially when the wave frequency is close to ion cyclotron frequencies. Previous experiments on the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) had demonstrated that the relative density of two ion species can be determined by examining nonlinear interaction of two counter-propagating Alfven waves. In this project we extended the study to a plasma with three ion species, where multiple wave bands exist, and more nonlinear interactions are possible. We also investigated the feasibility of launching two co-propagating waves to measure the ion composition. The findings of this study have implication in developing new technology to measure cold ion populations in space plasmas.

Anisotropic Energy Transfer and Conversion in Magnetized Compressible Turbulence

We present a spatial filtering (or coarse-graining) analysis on 3D magnetized magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence simulations. The filtered compressible MHD formulae show transfer of kinetic and magnetic energies from large to small scales, as well as energy conversion between kinetic, magnetic, and thermal energies. The anisotropic filtering enables separate analyses of the energy flows perpendicular and parallel to the global mean magnetic field. Anisotropy in energy cascade is demonstrated by the larger perpendicular energy cascade rate and also the larger perpendicular wavenumbers associated with the peak energy transfer rate. We also find that the “inertial range” along the parallel (perpendicular) direction in the anisotropic energy cascade formulation is no longer strictly dissipation-free, because it includes the dissipation in the perpendicular (parallel) direction. A change in the driving force (kinetic only versus kinetic and magnetic) affects the energy conversion between kinetic and magnetic energies. While the compressibility of the driving force changes the partition of different channels of energy transfer and conversion, and also increases the total energy transfer rate, the global energy flow remains unaffected by compressibility qualitatively. Our analysis can be applied to multispacecraft observations of turbulence in the solar wind or a planetary magnetosphere.

Hybrid simulation of Alfvén wave parametric decay instability in a laboratory relevant plasma

Large-amplitude Alfvén waves are subject to parametric decays, which can have important consequences in space, astrophysical, and fusion plasmas. Although the Alfvén wave parametric decay instability (PDI) was predicted decades ago, observational evidence is limited, stimulating considerable interest in laboratory demonstration of the instability and associated numerical modeling. Here, we report an important step toward direct hybrid simulation of the Alfvén wave PDI in a laboratory plasma, using antenna-like wave injection of a circularly polarized wave and realistic wave-plasma parameters. Considering collisionless damping, we identify the threshold Alfvén wave amplitudes and frequencies required for triggering the instability. These threshold behaviors are corroborated by simple theoretical analysis, considering the balance between PDI growth and ion Landau damping and PDI development in a bounded plasma. Other effects not included in the present model such as finite transverse wave scale and ion–neutral collisions are briefly discussed. These hybrid simulations promise to be a useful tool for investigating laboratory Alfvén wave dynamics and may provide guidance for future laboratory demonstration of the PDI process.

Parametric Decay of Alfvénic Wave Packets in Nonperiodic Low-beta Plasmas

The parametric decay of finite-size Alfvén waves in nonperiodic low-beta plasmas is investigated using one-dimensional (1D) hybrid simulations. Compared with the usual small periodic system, a wave packet in a large system under the absorption boundary condition shows different decay dynamics, including reduced energy transfer, localized density cavitation, and ion heating. The resulting Alfvén wave dynamics are influenced by several factors relating to this instability, including the growth rate, central wave frequency, and unstable bandwidth. A final steady state of the wave packet may be achieved when the instability does not have enough time to develop within the residual packet, and the packet size shows well-defined scaling dependencies on the growth rate, wave amplitude, and plasma beta. Under the proper conditions, enhanced secondary decay can also be excited in the form of a narrow, amplified wave packet. These results may help to interpret laboratory and spacecraft observations of Alfvén waves, and to refine our understanding of the associated energy transport and ion heating.
