Aryl ether-free polymer electrolytes for electrochemical and energy devices

Anion exchange polymers (AEPs) play a crucial role in green hydrogen production through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. The chemical stability of AEPs is paramount for stable system operation in electrolysers and other electrochemical devices. Given the instability of aryl ethercontaining AEPs under high pH conditions, recent research has focused on quaternized aryl ether-free variants. The primary goal of this review is to provide a greater depth of knowledge on the synthesis of aryl ether-free AEPs targeted for electrochemical devices. Synthetic pathways that yield polyaromatic AEPs include acid-catalysed polyhydroxyalkylation, metal-promoted coupling reactions, ionene synthesis via nucleophilic substitution, alkylation of polybenzimidazole, and Diels–Alder polymerization. Polyolefinic AEPs are prepared through addition polymerization, ring-opening metathesis, radiation grafting reactions, and anionic polymerization. Discussions cover structure–property–performance relationships of AEPs in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and water and CO 2 electrolysers, along with the current status of scale-up synthesis and commercialization.

Ion-selective membrane for redox flow batteries

A fluoro sulfonated poly(phenylene) was rationally designed with an external hydrophobic shell and internal hydrophilic core in order to improve the durability and ion selectivity of a hydrocarbon membrane for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). The polymer was designed to prevent hydrophilic polymer chain aggregation by attaching acid moieties onto the polymer backbone, while functionalizing the external polymer shell with hydrophobic side chains to prevent excessive vanadium crossover associated with cation exchange membranes. As an example, the hydrophobic shell can be provided by pentafluorobenzoyl group functionalization of the pendent aryl groups on a Diels Alder poly(phenylene) backbone, while the internal polymer chain can contain sulfonic acid moieties to impart hydrophilic character.

Poly(phenylene) with high ion selectivity for use in anion exchange membranes

A method for synthesizing a poly(phenylene) with high ion selectivity comprises dissolving an alkyl halide poly(phenylene) in a polar aprotic solvent to form a nonaqueous solution and adding an anhydrous nucleophile to the nonaqueous solution to replace the halide of the alkyl halide poly(phenylene) with a cationic group of the nucleophile. The poly(phenylene) can be used in anion exchange membranes.
