Follow-On Technology Requirement Study for Advanced Subsonic Transport

A study was conducted to define and assess the critical or enabling technologies required for a year 2005 entry into service (EIS) engine for subsonic commercial aircraft, with NASA Advanced Subsonic Transport goals used as benchmarks. The year 2005 EIS advanced technology engine is an Advanced Ducted Propulsor (ADP) engine. Performance analysis showed that the ADP design offered many advantages compared to a baseline turbofan engine. An airplane/ engine simulation study using a long range quad aircraft quantified the effects of the ADP engine on the economics of typical airline operation. Results of the economic analysis show the ADP propulsion system provides a 6% reduction in direct operating cost plus interest, with half the reduction resulting from reduced fuel consumption. Critical and enabling technologies for the year 2005 EIS ADP were identified and prioritized.

Coating A Bearing With Oxygen-Compatible Material

Laser powder-injection process developed to coat contact surfaces of shaft and hydrostatic bearing with alloy protecting against attack by liquid or gaseous oxygen. Protective alloy is INCO MA 754 (or equivalent). Forms coat uniform, dense, and hard. Has low coefficient of friction and wears negligibly. Does not ignite and burn in high-pressure oxygen. With it, underlying shaft and bearing alloy selected for strength and low thermal expansion rather than compatibility with oxygen.

Coating Hydrostatic Bearings To Resist Ignition In Oxygen

Coats of superalloy MA754 plasma-sprayed onto occasionally rubbing surfaces of hydrostatic journal bearings operating in liquid and/or gaseous oxygen, according to proposal. Prevents ignition and combustion occurring when components made of stainless steels or other conventional bearing alloys rub against each other in oxygen. Eliminates need for runner and enhances control over critical bearing clearance.
