Aperture amplitude and phase control of offset dual reflectors

An approximate synthesis method is presented for solving the problem of offset dual-shaped reflectors. It is shown that the equations obtained by this method are partial differential equations that can be integrated numerically, except that these equations are generally not total and therefore do not have a 'smooth' solution. However, it is demonstrated that these equations form a nearly total differential that enables one to generate a smooth subreflector by integrating the differential equations and then synthesizing a main reflector which gives an exact solution for the specified aperture phase distribution. Several important illustrative examples are treated, which validate the adequacy of the proposed method.

On the efficient computation of Fraunhofer and Fresnel region fields radiated by reflector and planar-aperture antennas

Computation of fields radiated by parabolic reflectors and planar apertures is a problem of prime importance, and conventional approaches to performing these computations are often very time-consuming. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of a series expansion technique for efficient computation of radiated fields in both the Fraunhofer and Fresnel regions. The series approach is based on the use of the Jacobi polynomials. The application of the series method to determining the far-field pattern of the antenna from the near-field measurements for an arbitrary aperture antenna is also discussed.

Synthesis of a laterally displaced cluster feed for a reflector antenna with application to multiple beams and contoured patterns

Two methods are described for efficiently synthesizing the excitation coefficients of a laterally displaced cluster feed in a reflector antenna subject to beam distortion. Applications are presented for rotationally symmetric paraboloids excited by an equilateral triangular array of feed elements. The basic cluster is a central element surrounded by a hexagonal ring. The first method - termed the sequential current method - determines a set of excitation coefficients which minimizes the phase distortion in the 'effective' aperture distribution of the reflector. The second method - termed the gradient optimization method - is such that the distortion in the secondary power pattern is directly minimized in a min-L2 form by a gradient optimization algorithm regarded as a systematic computer iteration procedure. Application to the synthesis of contour patterns is included.

New approaches to analysis and synthesis of reflector antennas

Recently developed techniques are reviewed for analyzing and synthesizing single and dual antennas for high efficiency and wide angle scan. The problem of contour beam synthesis using superposition of pencil beams is also discussed.

A review of performance characteristics of satellite antennas and some observations on future directions in satellite antenna design

A general review of the state-of-the-art and new directions in research and development of spacecraft antennas is presented. Three general classes of antennas are discussed: phased arrays, lenses (dielectric and waveguide), and reflector antennas. Presently, the antenna with most applications is the reflector with considerable research being performed to improve its scan and multiple beam characteristics. Future applications for spacecraft antennas and research goals to meet these projected needs also are discussed.
