The expansion of polarization charge layers into magnetized vacuum - Theory and computer simulations

The formation and evolution of polarization charge layers on cylindrical plasma streams moving in vacuum are investigated using analytic theory and 2D electrostatic particle-in-cell computer simulations. It is shown that the behavior of the electron charge layer goes through three stages. An early time expansion is driven by electrostatic repulsion of electrons in the charge layer. At the intermediate stage, the simulations show that the electron-charge-layer expansion is halted by the positively charged plasma stream. Electrons close to the stream are pulled back to the stream and a second electron expansion follows in time. At the late stage, the expansion of the ion charge layer along the magnetic field lines accompanies the electron expansion to form an ambipolar expansion. It is found that the velocities of these electron-ion expansions greatly exceed the velocities of ambipolar expansions which are driven by plasma temperatures.

Alpha particle heating in hot diamagnetic cavities

Observational data from ISEE 1 are analyzed and a one-dimensional electromagnetic hybrid computer simulation is conducted for the heating of solar wind alpha particles in hot diamagnetic cavities (HDCs). In the simulation, which envisions alpha heating by ion-ion instabilities, low beam densities excite the proton/proton right-hand resonant instability that then pitch-angle scatters the beam without significantly heating the alphas. At greater beam densities, the proton/proton nonresonant instability undergoes saturation through a trapping of all three ion components. These results support the Thomsen et al. (1988) hypothesis that the nonresonant instability is the primary source of ion heating in hot diamagnetic cavities.

Electrostatic beam instabilities in a positive/negative ion plasma

This paper examines the linear theory of electrostatic waves and instabilities in an unmagnetized, homogeneous Vlasov plasma. The first configuration considered is that of a stable plasma with three Maxwellian components: electrons, positive ions, and negative ions. The dispersion properties of the lightly damped ion modes are studied as a function of relative electron density and relative component temperatures. The second configuration considered is that of a tenuous electron-ion beam with drift speed streaming through a negative/positive ion plasma. If the beam is very tenuous, an electron beam instability is excited; if the beam is more dense, the instability becomes Buneman-like with parabolic dispersion. The thresholds and maximum growth rates of these instabilities are described as functions of the beam density and drift speed.
