Advanced Technology-Based Low Cost Mars Sample Return Missions

Mars Sample Return (MSR) has for many years been considered one of the most ambitious as well as most scientifically interesting of the suite of desired future planetary missions. This paper defines low- cost MSR mission concepts based on several exciting new technologies planned for space missions launching over the next 10 years. Key to reducing cost is use of advanced spacecraft & electronics technology.

Robotics and automation in Mars exploration

A new approach to the exploration of Mars is examined which relies on the use of smaller and simpler vehicles. The new strategy involves the following principles: limiting science objectives to retrieval of rock samples from several different but geologically homogeneous areas; making use of emerging microspacecraft technologies to significantly reduce the mass of hardware elements; simplifying missions to the absolutely essential elements; and managing risk through the employment of many identical independent pieces some of which may fail. The emerging technologies and their applications to robotic Mars missions are discussed.

A low cost/low complexity concept for the Mars Sample Return mission

Earlier concepts for the Mars Sample Return mission were complex and costly, and had little chance of being funded. This paper summarizes the evolution of a concept that permitted cost to be reduced by a factor of six, and the number of spacecraft elements to be halved. The primary feature of this low cost/low complexity concept is the application of advanced lightweight propulsion, materials, power, and avionics technology to the Mars Ascent Vehicle to make a direct return from Mars feasible. Mission parameters, launch mass breakdowns, spacecraft configuration drawings, technology requirements, and cost estimates are presented.
