Relationship between atmospheric CO2 variations and a satellite-derived vegetation index

Weekly data on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), obtained from the advanced very-high-resolution radiometer sensors flown on the NOAA's polar-orbiting meteorological satellites, were correlated with monthly changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration measured at the surface stations in Alaska, Hawaii, and the South Pole in the 1982-1984 period. While the South Pole data showed no relationship between CO2 concentration and the NDVI, the CO2 data taken at Alaska and Hawaii showed inverse correlation with the NDVI, demonstrating a measurable link between the CO2 drawdowns and the dynamics of NDVI, which in turn reflect the dynamics of photosynthesis. The data suggest that satellite data can be used for estimations of terrestrial photosynthetic activity.

The relationship of global green leaf biomass to atmospheric CO2 concentrations

Advanced very high resolution radiometer data from NOAA's polar orbiting meteorological satellite have been obtained globally for a 21 month period, processed to produce a green leaf biomass spectral vegetative index for the entire terrestrial surface by month, zonally aggregated by latitude, and compared to atmospheric CO2 concentrations from observing stations. A strong inverse association was found between the monthly Pt. Barrow CO2 concentrations and the vegetation index measurements from 50 deg N to 80 deg N, between the monthly Mauna Loa CO2 concentrations and the vegetation index measurements from 10 deg N to 30 deg N, 10 deg N to 80 deg N, and the global total, and between the globally averaged CO2 concentrations and the globally averaged vegetation index. No relationships between atmospheric CO2 concentrations and the vegetative index measurements from any latitude zone or combinations of zones were found for the South Pole station.

Chemistry between the stars

A unit is presented for the secondary school teacher of physics, chemistry, astronomy, or earth sciences. Included are a list of reference materials, teaching aids, and projects. Discussion questions and a glossary are also provided. Concepts developed are: the nature of interstellar space, spectroscopy, molecular signals from space and interstellar molecules and other areas of astronomy.
