Search for η c ( 2 S ) → π + π − η c and η c ( 2 S ) → π + π − K S 0 K ± π ∓ decays

Based on ( 27.12 ± 0.14 ) × 10 8 ψ ( 2 S ) events collected by the BESIII detector, we search for the decay η c ( 2 S ) → π + π − η c via ψ ( 2 S ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) . No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the product branching fraction B ( ψ ( 2 S ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) ) × B ( η c ( 2 S ) → π + π − η c ) is determined to be 2.21 × 10 − 5 at the 90% confidence level. In addition, the η c ( 2 S ) → π + π − K S 0 K ± π ∓ decay is studied via ψ ( 2 S ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) and is observed with a statistical significance of 10 σ for the first time. The branching fraction of η c ( 2 S ) → π + π − K S 0 K ± π ∓ is determined to be ( 1.33 ± 0.11 ± 0.40 ± 0.95 ) × 10 − 2 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third uncertainty is due to the quoted B ( ψ ( 2 S ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) ) . Formation and differentiation of three-dimensional rat marrow stromal cell culture on microcarriers in a rotating-wall vessel

Using a high aspect ratio vessel (HARV), this study investigated the formation of 3-D rat marrow stromal cell culture on microcarriers and the expression of bone-related biochemical markers under conditions of simulated microgravity. In addition, it calculated the shear stresses imparted on the surface of microcarriers of different densities by the medium fluid in an HARV. Secondary rat marrow stromal cells were cultured on two types of microcarriers, Cytodex-3 beads and modified bioactive glass particles. Examination of cellular morphology by scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of three-dimensional multicellular aggregates consisting of multiple cell-covered Cytodex-3 microcarriers bridged together. Mineralization was observed in the aggregates. Spherical cell-bead aggregates were observed in an HARV, while cell-bead assemblies were mostly loosely packed in a chain-like or branched structure in a cell bag. The expressions of alkaline phosphatase activity, collagen type I, and osteopontin were shown via the use of histochemical staining, immunolabeling, and confocal scanning electron microscopy. Using a numerical approach, it was found that at a given rotational speed and for a given culture medium, a larger density difference between the microcarrier and the culture medium (e.g., a modified bioactive glass particle) imparted a higher maximum shear stress on the microcarrier.

Time-varying zonal asymmetries in stratospheric nitrous oxide and methane

Previously analyses of Stratospheric And Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS) data of atmospheric constituent gases have dealt almost exclusively with zonal means (and mostly monthly means), owing perhaps to concern over data quality. The purpose of this note is to show that, with care, time-dependent zonally-asymmetric features may be recovered from the SAMS nitrous oxide and methane data. As an example, we demonstrate the existence of zonal wave-1 constituent perturbations with periods of a few weeks in the middle and upper stratosphere. When the perturbations are normalized by the constituent zonal-mean mixing ratio to compensate for the slowly varying (in both space and time) background concentration of constituents, wavepacket-like features are found over all latitudes and seasons in the three-year SAMS record. One specific low-latitude case discussed had features which appear to be consistent with constituent oscillations induced by episodic equatorial Kelvin waves. Further studies are needed to better identify the nature of the plethora of observed wave-like phenomena.
