Toward the Discovery of New Elements: Production of Livermorium (𝑍 = 116) with 50 Ti

The 244 Pu ⁒(50 Ti ,π‘₯⁒𝑛)⁒ 294βˆ’π‘₯ Lv reaction was investigated at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 88-Inch Cyclotron. The experiment was aimed at the production of a superheavy element with 𝑍 β‰₯114 by irradiating an actinide target with a beam heavier than 48 Ca. Produced Lv ions were separated from the unwanted beam and nuclear reaction products using the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator and implanted into a newly commissioned focal-plane detector system. Two decay chains were observed and assigned to the decay of 290 Lv . The production cross section was measured to be 𝜎 prod = 0.44($^{+0.58}_{βˆ’0.28}$) pb at a center-of-target center-of-mass energy of 220(3) MeV. Furthermore, this represents the first published measurement of the production of a superheavy element near the β€œisland of stability,” with a beam of 50 Ti and is an essential precursor in the pursuit of searching for new elements beyond 𝑍 =118.

Properties of the 256 Db decay chain

Experiments were performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's 88-Inch Cyclotron Facility to study the decays of neutron-deficient dubnium isotopes. These isotopes were produced in the 206 Pb( 51 V, xn) 255,256 Db reaction, and excitation functions were measured. This article reports on the observed properties of the 256 Db decay chain. The produced 256 Db nuclei were separated from unreacted-beam material and reaction byproducts with the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator (BGS) before being implanted into a double-sided silicon strip detector at the BGS focal plane. Decay properties of 256 Db and its daughters were then extracted from the analysis of correlations between implanted Db nuclei with Ξ± decay chains and spontaneous fission (SF) events. In total, 86 decay chains and 38 SF events were observed, giving increased statistics as compared to previous studies. In conclusion, improved decay data are presented for 256 Db and its daughter isotopes 252 Lr, 252 No, 248 Md, 248 Fm, 244 Es, and 244 Cf.

Spontaneous fission of the odd- Z isotope 255 Db

Experiments conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's 88-Inch Cyclotron Facility aimed to produce and study the decay of the previously unobserved isotope 255 Db. This isotope was produced in the 206 Pb( 51 V, 2⁒n) 255 Db reaction, separated from unreacted beam material and reaction by-products with the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator, and then implanted into a double-sided silicon-strip detector at the BGS focal plane. Decay properties of 255 Db were determined from the analysis of evaporation residue (EVR) fission and EVR-α–α correlations. The properties of this new isotope of dubnium differ dramatically from those of its neighboring Db isotopes. 255 Db was found to decay primarily by spontaneous fission (SF) with a small Ξ±-decay branch, where the average half-life of the observed decays was t 1/2 = 2.6$^{+0.4}_{– 0.3}$ ms. Theoretical calculations were performed using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation, with parameters calculated within a self-consistent microscopic approach, to see if these unique properties could be reproduced. A SF half-life estimate is obtained that closely matches the measured value, while simultaneously pointing out the sensitivities that need to be further constrained in future work.

Cross-shell excited configurations in the structure of 34 Si

The cross-shell excited states of 34 Si have been investigated via Ξ² decays of the 4 βˆ’ ground state and the 1 + isomeric state of 34 Al. Since the valence protons and valence neutrons occupy different major shells in the ground state as well as the intruder 1 + isomeric state of 34 Al, intruder levels of 34 Si are populated via allowed Ξ² decays. Spin assignments to such intruder levels of 34 Si were established through Ξ³-Ξ³ angular correlation analysis for the negative-parity states. The configurations of such intruder states play crucial roles in our understanding of the N = 20 shell gap evolution. A configuration interaction model derived from the FSU Hamiltonian was utilized in order to interpret the intruder states in 34 Si. Furthermore, shell model interaction derived from a more fundamental theory with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group method was also employed to interpret the structure of 34 Si.

Structure studies of 13 Be from the 12 Be ⁒(𝑑,𝑝) reaction in inverse kinematics on a solid deuteron target

The low-lying structure of 13 Be has remained an enigma for decades. Despite numerous experimental and theoretical studies, large inconsistencies remain. Being both unbound and one neutron away from 14 Be, the heaviest bound beryllium nucleus, 13 Be is difficult to study through simple reactions with weak radioactive-ion beams or more complex reactions with stable-ion beams. Here, we present the results of a study using the 12 Be (𝑑,𝑝)⁒ 13 Be reaction in inverse kinematics using a 9.5 MeV per nucleon 12 Be beam from the ISAC-II facility. The solid deuteron target of IRIS was used to achieve an increased areal thickness compared to conventional deuterated polyethylene targets. The 𝑄-value spectrum below βˆ’4.4 MeV was analyzed using a Bayesian method with geant4 simulations. A three-point angular distribution with the same 𝑄-value gate was fit with a mixture of 𝑠- and 𝑝-wave, 𝑠- and 𝑑-wave, or pure 𝑝-wave transfer. The 𝑄-value spectrum was also compared with geant simulations obtained using the energies and widths of states reported in four previous works. As a result, it was found that our results are incompatible with works that revealed a wide 5/2 + resonance but shows better agreement with ones that reported a narrower width.

Signature splitting of the g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in Ba 131 and Ce 133

Excited states in Ba 131 and Ce 133 were studied using in-beam Ξ³ -ray spectroscopy through the Sn 122 ( C 13 , 4 n ) Ba 131 and Te 125 ( C 12 , 4 n ) Ce 133 reactions, respectively. A strongly coupled band, associated with the Ξ½ g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + configuration, was identified in Ba 131 and Ce 133 . It is the first time to observe the Ξ½ g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the N = 75 isotones. The signature partners exhibit considerable energy splitting in comparison with those in the Ο€ g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the odd- A Ta and Re isotopes. Here, extensive cranked shell model and quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations reveal the origin of the signature splitting, which depends not only on the triaxiality, but also on the configuration mixing with nearby low- j orbitals.

Absence of Low-Energy Shape Coexistence in 80 Ge: The Nonobservation of a Proposed Excited 0 2 + Level at 639 keV

The 80 Ge structure was investigated in a high-statistics Ξ²-decay experiment of 80 Ga using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC through Ξ³, Ξ²-e, e-Ξ³ and Ξ³-Ξ³ spectroscopy. No evidence was found for the recently reported 0 2 + 639-keV level suggested as evidence for low-energy shape coexistence in 80Ge. Large-scale shell model calculations performed in 78,80,82 Ge place the 0 2 + level in 80 Ge at 2 MeV. The new experimental evidence combined with shell model predictions indicate that low-energy shape coexistence is not present in 80 Ge.
